Just as the title says, what do you guys think is the most important thing that most commonly adult game developers either pay too little attention to, or just entirely neglect?

-A Story.
And a
-Realistic Progression between characters.

That is what i am personally missing in a lot of games :)

Most devs are just interested in creating a simple fuck-fest, and i can't blame them because most people on sites like this only care about H content.

I remember in the beginning, back when my game was 0.01, how so many devs told me I would have a hard time due to lack of h-scenes and heavy story focus. Mainly that people simply wanted their fast taboo fap and be done with it.
"If they want a story they play story-based AAA games, if they want gameplay they play AAA games focused on the gameplay."

But what my experience so far has taught me is that it is far from the truth and the devs have grossly underestimated the players on the site and in general.

Indeed,

There are plenty of people on this site (and others) that appreciate a good story or a game that takes times to play.
I personally rather play a good story based games for 8 hours with 1 H scene, than a "fuck fest"game for 1 hour with 8 H scenes.

I think that most Devs just give up because gaining sufficient financial support for a story based game takes longer than those other games..

Agreed! But I would like it better if the H scene would gradually progress over the course of 8 hrs, in bits, giving us a taste of what is to come. That ensures that we (players) remain glued in until the end!

That was my initial thoughts too and expectations for my release.
But using graphtreon and looking at my own earnings compared to pretty much all the other that's around my timeline
and it shows another story.

And it's not like my writing skills are anything to brag about. Basically my first attempt of a story ever.
Just think I'm one of the first the focus so heavily on the story aspect. Once a dev comes with proper writing talent, it's going to explode in popularity. That I have no doubt about.

Can't judge about that ;).
Because of the flood of 0.01's and 0.02's and almost the same amount of abandoned 0.01's and 0.02's i no longer play new games until they at least have a couple updates:).
But i hear some great stories from a couple friends from this site so i probably will check it out when it updates again ;)

But i did judge pledged a couple bucks so i can check out some of the stuff on your patreon ;).
You've made me more curious ;).

It's new devs unreasonable expectations of how they think patreon works. What they do not realize is that only a few percents of adult games make the big money. And those are usually the early birds that were here when the market was still in its baby steps.
Then new games copy paste what they did and get confused why they not gaining tons of money in the first 2-3 months.
That's why passion and dedication are needed. And the willingness to try something new.

Thanks for the pledge.(y) Hope ya enjoy the game.

To add to this, too many games reach whatever milestones they want with certain characters and then drop them entirely. Even the big name titles are guilty of this. I think my 10/10 pick for a game on this site is Depraved Awakenings because Philly did such a great job of incorporating all of the girls into the story and keeping them in (until you reach a natural conclusion in their story). All of the characters had individual personalities, had their moments to shine, and managed to create a compelling narrative with multiple paths that smoothly progresses if you follow along as it's being developed yet is actually pretty long on replay.

Story of course, but since this one is slowly getting more attention lately, I would say two other things:

1. Optimized gameplay: okay this one only goes for games with actual gameplay, but too often I see games with management, walking, shopping sections made clumsy by unnecessary menus, confirmations, buttons all over the screen, no keyboard or mouse support and - my worst enemy - needing to click 10 times in multiple places every time you need to do a different action.

2. Fetishes: completely personal, but I feel most games made now tend to be very vanilla, I would like to see developers using more creativity, even if they don't want to add extreme stuff.

Oh I'm gonna concentrate on this area in the game which I'm gonna develop soon!

Compelling gameplay OR decissions that ACTUALLY change the story(And pathsplitting, with these decissions). I do enjoy some games where you only have to choose and read, but I'll be honest here, what keeps me hooked to a game, sincerely, is mostly the gameplay and various aspects of it.

On the Compelling gameplay side: For example, I used to play a game called Ghost Hunter Vena, and I just played it through having so much fun. The sex "scenes" were neat-o, and depending on your skill you could just get many of them or just one once in a while. The story was nice, and the gameplay was pretty simple but fun. You literally had to press just a few buttons for combat (Stun and damage, that's all.), but it kept you busy enough with the story so you just didn't care.

Another example would be Forest of Blue Skin, which is a game similar to US, it's a platformer that's actually fun because your job is to capture the monster girls by doing certain stuff(It's not just kill them and you get them, each has it's own way to be captured), and each monster girl you capture gives you a skill, which you might need to advance to a new area or even simply reaching a secret area you couldn't before. Similar to it(Without the capturing monster thing), would be Unholy Sanctuary, which is a heavily Castlevania-based game(The gameplay is identical).

On the Decissions side: A good example would be Good Girl Gone Bad. You make "this" choice here, the game changes completely for you. You make "that" one choice right there, then you might never see certain characters, or you might see some new ones in it's place. For example: There's events you hear off in one playthrough, that in another playthrough you would be in. There's characters that if you don't pay attention to or ignore they become drug addicts or they do X or Y.

Voice acting with actual VAs to do some of the sex scenes. All too often, especially based around the fact that ~95% of the games on this site have lots of females in them and so few men, you'd think there would be more people around that were willing to do this. Then again, sometimes the women's voices don't sound like they 'should'... it's a fine line.

Oh, and playable endings. What's the point of getting every woman/man in the area to be your fuck-buddy / cum-dump if you just get one sex scene and that's it?

An identity. Too many devs concern themselves with catering to the masses instead of making something that they enjoy. Make the game you yourself would want to play. The players will respond in time.

Characters with personality. I don't play many western VN's because the characters are lacking any sort of depth in a lot of them.

Sure you get the occasional shining star like Depraved Awakening that has a few good characters but then you get generic incest/corruption characters that tend to be copy pasta's of characters from old games.

I get bored easily and if the story doesn't grab me I rely on characters and if they don't grab me I delete and forget about them.

I don't care much for the sex scenes, they are always welcome but only if they enhance the story and not just sex for the sake of sex. If I wanted sex with shit plot and dull as dish water characters i'd watch Pornhub. I'm here for a decent story with good characters and meaningful sex and all of those require characters I care about.

It only takes one or two really good characters to keep me interested, i'm not greedy. Magical Marriage Lunatics highlights my point. I hate the MC, the childhood friend is generic and boring and the goddess is basic and plain. Luce, Karin, Juli and Luluna are all fantastic characters with some great banter and turned what would have been a 50 hour snore fest into an interesting read.

Last Sovereign has some of the best characters i've seen in a game and when you have a character called Cumdump yet manage to make her the cutest, most adorable and beloved characters ever developed you know you're onto a winner.

That first one is something I have never even thought of before. I wonder if anyone is making a game where a character has a Colombian accent

It's hard to disagree with any of the above. In fact I don't. :)

But I wonder...are we on the cusp of a new wave of games?

We had the initial ones that kick started the trend, then of course the multiple copycats especially with regards to that poor unfortunate young man with the giant dick who has usually lost one or both parents whilst living with his sister/s etc. But of late I'm picking up a change in the wind.

Yes, there are still more of those poor unfortunate chaps finding their way into the world, but....we are also seeing a shift in quality, I feel, either in terms of rendering, storytelling or just trying something new. Acting Lessons, Depraved Awakening, Long live the Princess, High Rise Climb, Doctor Amana, the DeLuca Family all meet this criteria in one way or another. I gather some ditzy bird made a space game too but *shrugs* ;)

So maybe, just maybe, we're seeing a change in trend? I hope so.

Not to beat a dead horse, but it is generally speaking a real plot and character development. I think Character Development is the most important part. This starts with the MC.

I know, I know, people want an MC that they can project themselves onto, however, that always results in an MC that has nothing to offer. Why does that matter you might ask? Well, relationships are a two way street, you have to have some sort of give and take. Since most MC have nothing inherent to give, there's nothing that any character wants to take from them. This means that by the nature of the narrative, your love interests become antagonists. Materialistic Golddiggers are the only characters such an MC can attain.

So, first step, give your MC something desirable, be it a career or a hobby, or what have you. Second though, is making characters who desire what your MC has. Just making your MC better doesn't make your characters better by proxy, rather it gives you a starting point for your other characters. Say you've made your MC a writer, now make one of the romantic interests a huge fan of your work. This would likely be your easiest relationship, so it's wise to also make that one the least experienced sexually. Next, make a character who is also a writer. This romantic interest will be antagonistic, but unlike the materialistic golddigger, the struggle will be over who is better, and when you prove to her that you're worthy she'll concede. Now you've got two girls that desire our MC because of the thing he does, rather than from an action that we have to take.

Now, that's no enough, there should usually be something else about your character that is desirable. In this third spot I'd actually leverage the one or two relationships the MC has been able to form. Say he's got a childhood friend, cousin, little sister, etc. Their relationship has been mostly platonic on both sides forever. However, once your MC starts dating one of the other characters this character starts to get jealous. They begin to realize that they crave the attention and love that you give these other characters for themselves. Boom, now you have 3 characters who want your MC. It's still up to you to make the MC keep them, but now you no longer have to come up with stupid and contrived reasons for the characters to be together. They're together because both parties want it, no gold digging, no molestation, no harassment required.

But Darth, what about the plot? Well, what plot would you like? I mean, the scenario I just outlined could take place in literally any setting, but it's likely too mundane for fantasy or sci-fi. However, I say that and just remembered that there's a game called Shades of Grey where the MC is a writer too, and it's a futuristic setting. But seriously, I just used writer as a stand in. You could make your MC a knight, one character is a fan of his from the joust or something, one character is a rival, won't back down till you best them in combat, another is still the jealous one you've known your whole life. So you can literally do this in any plot.

Do you want a story where a knight takes on an evil wizard? Then write that story. Do you want a plot where a gumshoe detective takes on a corrupt corporation in a cyberpunk world? Write that. Just remember, in these stories, what it is that your MC has to offer so that you can design characters around them. Try to go a little light on the damsel in distress trope though. I know they're big in both of the plots I just made, but they don't have to be.

jumping off on the story thing a lot of games don't include the idea of No. Too many games devolve into harem fuck-fests and don't let a guy get to be exclusive with a girl without missing out on the other characters, in terms of talking with them and taking in the story. They either have you fuck everyone without a choice, or they give you the choice but said choice means avoiding the other characters entirely. I enjoy my story, I enjoy logical progression, and I enjoy exclusivity. It's why I enjoy games like Princess Evangile because you choose a girl, but it doesn't come at the price of never interacting with the other characters. My dream Adult game would be a sandbox game like milfy city or the like, that lets us interact with characters in either a non-erotic or erotic way at our discretion but keeps a logical story.

A lot of indie adult games have the same problem that Persona 3 had with social links. To max out female social links in that game you had to romance them. They thankfully rectified that mistake in P4/P5. Basically, let us choose who we want to fuck without it costing us the story.
