I've been using that avatar for a while now, since last august I think. I specifically talked to doorknob about it and it all was dandy, I would have appreciated that someone would have the decency to tell me if it wasn't ok, rather than outright ban.
but I'm convinced that this is just a severe case of stupidity, someone thought I was using a picture of Hitler and that doofus is part of the staff, which is dangerous.

If that picture really is the only reason for the ban other than ban evasion, it's pretty much justified tho. That someone could see Chaplin's face and think "OMG Hitler!" is itself a worry, but if you see that fake party logo and still no alarm bells ring...

As he said himself, it's his second ban, and he have two tickets opened... So I doubt that it's the only reason.
It was used as profile picture, and not limited to the face since the hand was included. A bit less obvious that it's Chaplin under those conditions.

I saw it, it was still in the "really obvious" zone. Especially if you considered the party logo.
Anyway, the forum can decide who they ban and why, and like you said there may be another reason, but let's at least be honest and admit a socialist actor who parodied Hitler isn't a "racist" picture.

Man, I came in here to bestow wizardly knowledge about who some acter was, and instead I got all this. Anyways, ban was justified for being a repeated racist dickhead. The profile picture is very much Charlie, but the issue is that you're specifically using a picture of him in a hitler like costume because you know you can't use hitler as a pfp. You wanted to undermine an anti-racism rule just so that you could cry about being banned and scream "See!11!! It's TECHNIALLY NOT racist!1111!!!! The mods are fascist!!1" despite doing all this shit with racist intent.
