I'm going to make this review fairly informal. This game was a massive letdown. When I saw the page my expectations were high, as I assumed that the graphics would be representative of the quality of the rest of the game. Unfortunately, this is far from the case.
The gameplay is atrocious. The first thing I noticed was that enemies spawn in when your camera moves over their spawn points. That means that if you move backwards, all the enemies you defeated before will respawn behind you, and when you go forwards again any enemies you might have previously beaten will respawn as well. Actions as trivial as jumping can respawn enemies, including those UNDERNEATH YOU. And to top things off, there are some enemies that DON'T respawn for some reason.
The core game mechanics are also quite boring and repetitive. You walk up to one of the same ten enemies, attack it a couple of times, don't walk backwards, and move on to the next one. There are only a couple types of weapons, and one kind of potion. By about halfway through the game, money becomes obsolete. I had enough money to buy every weapon and fill up the remainder of my inventory with potions. Boss fights, while they can be incredibly unbalanced, are sometimes kind of fun. Otherwise though, there really isn't much to it.
Perhaps some of the most frustrating parts of the game are the glitches. First, you HAVE to play the game using Locale Emulator or change your system locale to Japanese, since not doing this will completely break all items (including key items). Once you do that though, you're still not free from the swarm of bugs to come.
Most of the time when you take damage, you turn invisible for all of your I-frames, leaving you to guess where you'll be when you reappear (which is also the moment you're able to take damage again). I constantly found myself in places I didn't expect to be because of this, and usually in the line of fire. There are also situations where you can clip through the ground, such as if you jump while standing with a ceiling directly above your head if you don't have the
As the game progresses, the poor design also starts to bleed through. I've found enemies in walls, enemies rendered upside down, even an enemy that fell upwards. It's possible for some of your inputs to get completely lost (i.e. jumping or attacking) in some situations. And even without all the glitches present, the game's balance just gets completely broken after finding an item about two-thirds of the way through
And to finish things off, just as I was about to confront what I assume to be the final boss, the game completely crashed, with my last save being quite a long time ago. Needless to say, I ragequit and immediately uninstalled.
As an obligatory addition to any review, the story is a poor excuse of a porn plot and the h-scenes get repetitive. The only reason I'm rating this above a single star is because the art really did seem to receive more love than all other aspects of the game combined, resulting in a pleasing aesthetic and attention to detail. That was perhaps the only thing that kept me going while I played, trying to swat away all the bugs I found.
