Do you have to start a new save with every version? When I load up my old save, the notebook is always open and can't be closed, so I can't see most of the screen. Can still interact with things, though.

The game got a new tavern image and you will have to start a new game. You wont have to start a new game for each update unless the game gets an update that change gameplay.
