VN - Ren'Py - Color of My Sound [Ch.3 Finale v6] [Gallant Trombe]

  1. 5.00 star(s)

    slick97

    Review Version: Ch.1 Finale v9
    Overall Score: 97/100
    Value: Extremely High

As is standard with all of my reviews I will break it up into 5 distinct sections each covering different aspects of an AVN.

    *Beware: Spoilers ahead*

    Story
“Color of My Sound” breaks the mould when it comes to AVNs with it’s heavy sci-fi setting and a plot shrouded in mystery. You’re thrust into a vast world with exhaustive lore that rivals traditional novels, and a clear attention to detail when creating the setting for an interesting conflict. The quality is unparalleled, even when compared to more popular AVNs as the developer shows a high level of care.

The plot follows the traditional structure outlined by Freytag’s Pyramid, but impressively manages to smoothly transition between each stage. The beginning of the story is paced rather well as you learn more about the world and experience the inciting incident for the rest of the plot. Impressively, the author avoids overwhelming the audience with info dumps as exposition is woven into the story itself, wherein you’re given key history when it’s absolutely required. This is the type of exposition that some renowned authors continue to struggle with even with years of industry experience.

The author manages to create a universe that feels unique despite competing with titans in the sci-fi genre, such as the Star Wars universe and Mass Effect trilogy. The level of technology takes the approach of being advanced enough to sell the notion of intergalactic travel, but grounds itself by following accepted physical principles (no Midichlorians or Eezo here). Overall it’s a refreshing take on a galactic civilization with the author bringing a unique style to the table.

The story is still early in development but still makes liberal use of political intrigue and subterfuge. At various points you’re led to believe one thing, only for the next few scenes to sew enough doubt as to whether something else might be unfolding. It’s shaping up to be a rollercoaster style experience as you try to unravel the mystery behind the rebel forces and governing bodies of the empire.

    Characters
“Color of My Sound” introduces a wide cast of characters coming from various backgrounds, and you’re in charge of ensuring they all get along. As of this review there are a total 5 primary characters that form the foundation of Squad Nu.

Let’s begin with the character you will control: Vayne. The initial impression given by the author is that Vayne is a rather unremarkable musician who is trying to make a living. However, his life is upended when he witnesses a nuke being dropped on his city and enlists into the Imperial Navy. We’re led to believe initially that he joined due to his home planet being devasted, but it’s later revealed that his motivation is rather mundane as he needed a source of income. By the time we join Squad Nu he’s already an accomplished officer with a legendary record… that we don’t get to experience firsthand. While off-putting at first, this style of protagonist allows us to more effectively witness his growth as a character. As we slowly peel away the layers of his past we begin to learn that this larger than life legend is more relatable than he first appears, and gives more credence to future developments of his personality.

Lana Kihel fulfills a similar role to Vayne: she’s a legendary naval officer that has a similar track record. We’re introduced to her as the “Ice Queen”, an allusion to her serious demeanor and tactical assessments. However, as we slowly learn more about her upbringing we start to experience a softer side to her that also feels believable. The already apparent character development is a positive sign that we’ll see meaningful interactions between her and Vayne as she also begins to unravel his past, and apparent guilt.

Mireille Lowell and Blanche Aureus are polar opposite when it comes to personality. Mireille was raised as a corporate spy, calculating and deceptive, while Blanche was raised as in a more welcoming atmosphere to become a tech specialist. These characters serve as juxtapositions to each other, but as time goes on they slowly influence the other’s personality which could lead to rather interesting team dynamics later on.

Finally, Elise is the lady of a Frontier House who exhibits childlike adoration of Vayne and Lana. She serves as a temperance to the plethora of mistrust sewn by the other characters and events unfolding. She serves an integral role to the story as she breaks the already established distrusting atmosphere. While her character has received little in the way of development, her personality could have far reaching consequences on the team and be the adhesive needed to keep everyone together.

    Visual Quality
I’ll keep this section rather short as the visual quality of each render is impressive. Each scene contains high resolution stills that serve to aid in telling the story rather than taking attention away from it. We’re given concrete visualizations of the universe we’re in and the technology available. More impressively is the micro-expressions we can see on some of the characters faces at various points which expertly convey their emotions and tone of the conversation. Most importantly, there are no placeholder textures to break your immersion into the story.

    Lewd Content
One of the core pillars of a successful AVN is the lewd content that gives it the “adult” rating. “Color of My Sound” wastes no time thrusting you into a sex within the first 10 minutes. While it may appear as a throwaway scene just to keep an audience it aids in the plot later on as we witness Vayne using this exact scene as a coping mechanism.

Overall there are few sex scenes so at the time of writing, however each one is developed in such a way as to seamlessly fit into the story. There hasn’t been a sexual encounter that felt out of place or intentionally rushed, which is a refreshing change of pace from the plethora of AVNs that throw them out like pennies.

    Conclusion
Overall this is an AVN that is expertly crafter and clearly displays the passion the author has. Every scene and each line of dialogue all aid in telling a story without excessiveness. “Color of My Sound” has incredible potential to rise to the top of the charts, even rivaling Caribdis and DriftyGames.

Keep up the excellent work Trombe!

This VN deserves much more recognition for what it really does outstandingly. There are hardly any science fiction VNs with that narrative scale that manage to create such a good atmosphere. The renders are very good, the characters are diverse and multi-layered. I think the characters lack a bit of facial expressiveness. On the other hand, this game is set in a universe where emotional outbursts are frowned upon or at least not recommended if you want to get anywhere.

Sexuality is not necessarily the strong point of CoMS from my point of view, because it's not really doing a good job explaining why certain characters have such a strong desire to service others sexually, i.e. what motivates them or why this seems to be such a weakness to a character that is otherwise considered cold like ice for instance. But maybe this is something that will be explained later in the plot.

These observations don't really affect my appreciation of where CoMS stands out though. The world building, the atmosphere, short action scenes that nevertheless pack a punch, convincing spy stories against the backdrop of intergalactic superpowers vying for supremacy. The feeling of being just a small grain of sand in the gears, and related to that the question of meaning: What motivates the protagonist? What is the endgame for all of this? Who can he trust?

This one gave me Altered Carbon vibes. Well, the good kind of vibes, from the first season. We have big and complicated world, MC with difficult past, we don't know much of what's happening yet and we see that we shouldn't trust anybody, even our own team. On the graphic side ther is alsn nothing to complain of - renders quality is awesome, playing this game was a real pleasure for my eyes. Well then.. nothing more to say, just keep it up with the good work :)

I like it. I'm always amazed when there's a lot of lore in these kinds of games. I don't even like sci-fi that much which is why I haven't tried this until now.
Renders look great. Story and dialogue are interesting enough to keep my attention. Though just not sure whether my choices actually matter that much.
I just wish there was sound. It just feels kind of "off" for some reason.

Review as of [Ch.1 Finale v8]

    SPOILERS!

    My Synopsis:

Color of My Sound is an erotic, sci-fi set in the distant future.
The story revolves around The Officer whom is an experienced, well-liked, and highly decorated army officer.

The Officer has been chosen to serve as the leader of a covert organization made up of members from each House. To learn more about the alleged forthcoming uprising following the Day of Infamy.

With such few information, does The Officer have what it takes to command this motley crew and figure out what occurred in order to put an end to what appears to be a raging civil war?

Renders - Models and settings are really well done; they don't resemble one another in the way that they frequently do in other VNs.

I should also point out that the developer places a lot of emphasis on lighting. Its strength in terms of renderings is its ability to focus and involve lighting in a way that complements the characters. It also sets the ambience for the current mood of the scene.

In addition, our MC has a nice flair for appearance as opposed to the more typical rather slender appearance.

Story – It's a chapter 1, however it's quite long. It is one of those AVNs that focuses a lot on the narrative. It currently concentrates on character development and world building.

I would say that I enjoyed the direction the plot was taking, with the mystery and intrigue, as well as where it may go, potential future conflicts, and perhaps some additional action sequences.

Animations – There aren't any animations yet. However, I believe that at this time, it is unnecessary. The VN has the impression of being carefully and slowly constructed for a high-quality outcome. And if the developer decided to do so, I believe it will be of high quality.

Sounds – Uh, sometimes when it's silent people claim it's tranquil.

Grammar – It's excellent and completely unbroken. I may claim that the developer spent effort proofreading.

Dev - Feedback has been well accepted by the developer, and modifications are frequently implemented as a result.

    Conclusion:
Giving it a 5-Star rating and looking forward to the story's continuation and how the developer builds upon the strong foundation he has laid for it.

Really into this one after playing it, the story is pretty good and only seems like it will only get better over time, the mc isn't a bummbling 18 year old virgin, the Li all have their own personalitys that work well with back and forth banter I also like the fact that it's almost kinetic but at the same time it isn't, the story and scenes will only divert slightly and you may get a small variation but it links back up shortly after, didn't miss one h scene and only missed one small story scene but it was a small variation like I've said, I hope the VN remains this way but I guess we'll see, it's decently written with very detailed renders and I cant wait to see more now, good luck with the future Gallant Trombe

Color Of My Sound is a story driven SciFi game. If you like story driven games with a clear focus on the "story" part and much less emphasis on the "sex" or "romance" part (as of now) then this game is absolutely worth your time.

The character design is top shelf, all the female characters look very unique and each is of course exceptionally pretty. Color Of My Sound is a harem game, but what sets it apart from most other harem games is that the potential love interests are all pretty mysterious figures and maybe not entirely trustworthy. You may even dislike a few characters because of their actions. All potential love interests have their own motivations, most of which are still not entirely known.

The MC is a former musician who suffers from a condition that renders all the music he hears into "noise", but now he is a celebrated military hero tasked with finding out more about the "Rebels" who launched a devastating attack on the Empire about a year ago. So the MC is assigned a team of (all female) specialists to uncover more about the Rebels on a planet called "Elysium".

The game may at first be very confusing, since it doesn't really explain anything, things only become clearer as you progress. But especially early on it feels almost like a fever dream. The game begins with the MC after his first major gig with a band, he meets a groupie called June and the two hook up and connect almost immediately.
Then there's a hard transition into the present and the player is bombarded with lots of confusing details like brain implants, a mysterious handler, and there is some exposition thrown in that explains a few things about the world. Dune certainly was a major inspiration for the Empress and the three major noble houses that control the galactic Empire.

Don't let the somewhat confusing start deter you though, things will get clearer as you progress. Still, there are many, many mysteries in the game - all of them pretty intriguing as well. What's the story with June for example? The groupie the MC meets first thing in the game? She keeps popping up in very lucid dreams and she certainly has some major significance. Yet she simply disappears after a night of having sex with the MC, only to appear in those lucid dreams.
Who exactly are the rebels? What game are the noble houses playing? And most importantly: what are the agendas of the various female special ops team members? The game also strongly suggests that a Rebel spy may be among the team.

The strength of the game is its exceptional visuals, especially the character design stands out. Another huge plus is that the potential love interests are all very unique and quite three dimensional and what makes it even more interesting is that it's not entirely certain if all of them are even trustworthy. Chances are of course that all of the potential love interests will eventually become loyal romantic partners if the MC makes the right decisions, but it will certainly not be an easy route as in so many other harem games where the love interests often jump on the MC at the first opportunity.

Color Of My Sound is very light on sexual content, there are only three or four scenes in the entirety of chapter 1 (you can play through it in one somewhat longer session). Also, the scenes are not animated. But the static renders are really good and quite frankly, most standard 2 second loop animations are not that great to begin with, so the fact that you only get static renders here should not keep you from playing this game. There are quite a lot of renders in this game and I think most people won't really miss the standard animations.

So what you do get is lots of renders for things like talking, eye movements, the characters emote, in many ways Color Of My Sound, despite the lack of animations, is a more "animated" experience than many other games which often feature one static render for several lines of dialogue. Here the characters feel a bit more alive because of things like mouth and eye movement.

The game also has no music or sound, which may surprise some because of the title of the game, but apparently this absence of music and sound has a story reason, since the MC has some deep trauma that prevents him from mentally processing music. Apparently sounds and then music will be added as the story progresses. But for now the game is a silent experience.

Color Of My Sound, while a bit confusing at first, is certainly one of the best story driven SciFi games currently in development. And as mentioned character design is top level, those are some of the most attractive characters in any game, ever. The central story is packed with mystery and even though it's a harem game it's not a shallow or superficial game at all.

People who want more action between the characters may be disappointed though. So you need some patience here. This is definitely a story driven slow burn. There are also no kinks to speak of, the two major sex scenes are all pretty much romantic and vanilla - without any choices. Depending on your own preferences this may be a plus or a negative for you, I appreciate the approach here.

Also, if you want lots of choices or branching paths then Color Of My Sound may not be entirely your thing, there are some choices, but mostly for flavor. You can reject sex once or twice, but it has no real consequences, so for now at least chapter 1 mostly plays like a kinetic novel.

However, if you like story driven slow burn games with a SciFi setting and if you are ok with the game having few actual choices then Color Of My Sound will grab your attention and keep you engaged. This game has a good chance of becoming one of the very best with future updates, even without animations. It's certainly off to a promising start. Just get through the somewhat confusing beginning even if you may feel a bit overwhelmed and confused by the abrupt tonal shift once the scene with June ends.

Typically I don't review things on this site. I engage with the content very casually. But this one grabbed my attention. I had my typical download spree one night and the pictures of this one seemed good and reviews were high. But I really wasn't prepared for what I was going to get. The story so far (Ch.1 Finale v8) is rather short but it was intriguing and suspenseful. I like to analyse media as my past time. I'm very critical with all movies I watch and all books I read. I suppress that critical side of me when engaging with porn. I'm here just to get off. Something happened with this one that hasn't happened with anything else though. I got off, but still continued playing because I genuinely connected with the characters and wanted to see what would happen next. There is not a ton of sex in the VN yet but for once I don't see that as a bad thing. I found myself more interested in the storytelling than the porn. And that is saying something because I was horny as hell.
So since I was more interested in the actual storytelling I also applied my critical eye to it and honestly so far find very little to criticise about it. The major points would be that the MC is a bit of a gary stu character, which is typical for stories on this site, but I feel it was important to mention since I mentioned that this was a bit different from others. There is also some clunky characterisation with Lady Safiya. It really seems the player is deliberately mislead and it creates some disconnection from what is actually happening in the story. There are some minor nitpicks but that's most of what I've found to be worth criticising so far. That is quite incredible for a pornographic visual novel and I'm extremely pleasantly surprised.
Now, if I was writing the story I would have the PTSD the MC is suffering from affect more than the occasional nightmare. I would have more scenes like the one that gives you your first chance of "private time" with Lana. Oh but that specific part was done wonderfully. I went back after my first playthrough to see what's different if you make different choices and I love how they made your choice of expoiting Lana, actually exploitative. Having being horny be a punishment in a pornographic game would usually be a negative thing for me but by the time the story had progressed to that point I was so caught up in the story I no longer made the choices with my nether regions. So it was placed in a very good point. Having that choice very early on would have annoyed me.
I would also give the MC more flaws than a guilty conscience and being "too principled". Because both of those things are kind of just good traits having drawbacks. They aren't actual character flaws. Him being altrusitic is good but make him have oversights and blind spots that don't make him an idiot.
My criticism about Safiya is an easier fix. Just give her concrete goals and that's pretty much it. Now I know that the character is intended to be mysterious at least so far and I also know she has been shown very sparingly and there is promise of giving more explanations about her in the future. So this criticism is only valid if they don't do something about it in the near future. Which I expect they will. But my review is based on what exists currently.
All in all, a very well constructed story with a nice amount of reasonably believable sexual encounters. Of course they are prettied up quite a bit but that's what we want in these stories. As stated before, an extremely pleasant surprise.
PS. For the love of god I want more June. She is too sweet and adorable. And her dynamic with Vayne was wonderful. I very much hope this isn't another case of "meets a sweet girl, doesn't meet her for a few years and when reunited she's unrecognisable".
PS. PS. Whoa this turned out long. I hope you find it informative at the very least.
Edit: Fixed typos, I should have read the review before posting it but... I was just excited to get it out there.

This game deserves a high rating definetly. The setting is very nice and the plot is interesting and engaging. It definetly feels like the characters are well thought out and have a certain depth to them. You get to know the characters piece by piece and by the looks of it you really get to develop relationships with the characters. Im definetly interested to see where this game is going. I also really like that the women arent just jumping in bed with you when its not fitting for their character, but you still get to see sex scenes early on in the story.
As for the looks they are very good. There are a few games where the girls might look better, butthats just personal preferences i guess. Other than that the game looks very nice even tho there arent any animations.
Only things i hope that change are the number of impactful choices, so far it doesnt feel like you have too much control over how the story progresses and that the choices you get dont have consequences (other than choosing not to have a sex scene) and the times when there is no teyt but you have to click a lot to advance, would be nice if those were animated or automated.
But overall its definitely worth playing and ill be interested to see where this is going.

    Currently: Ch.2 v4:

Let's summarize the story so far:

Girl A hides truth from MC: "Eh, I'll get to it later"
Girl B hides truth from MC: "Eh, I'll get to it later"
    Add girls C, D, E, F and G, repeat same sentence.

I do love me a good mystery, but MC is nothing short of a bloody idiot so far. Everyone's playing him for a complete fool and he's doing nothing, zero, zilch, nada, about it.
    It's like a horribly written sci-fi novel.

If MC showed even a tiniest bit of intelligence I wouldn't be this harsh, but so far he hasn't. He's just blindly following what members of his team say, who repeatedly say "we're here to follow you". Only for them to recommend/do something different and MC deciding whatever they said is probably best course of action.

The renders are amazing, and I love the setting, that's only reason this is not lower.

But hey, the girls are hot.

Last 2 updates took a total of 10 minutes to finish.
During that time, MC has talked to 3 girls...and that's it.

Story progress is going nowhere. Character development is definitely welcome, but it just feels like the game made ton of mysteries and now doesn't know how to progress with them.

    EDIT for Ch2v7:
Few updates later, MC is worse! I don't know how a useless, spineless, whiniest character can be made worse, but somehow dev managed it.

It's hard to enjoy what is otherwise a great story (and I mean it, there's a damn fucking good mystery here) when I can't stand a single thing MC does (mostly nothing unless ordered by "his" team) and says (whining, whining, whining)

Finally, game text has weird half second delay after each press and before new text appears. It makes quick reading incredibly annoying.

This game is one of the best Sci-fi visual novels I've ever played. The story is very good, focusing heavily on the intrigues of a Galactic Empire. Each character you meet seems to have an agenda of their own, and that adds great depth and realism to the story.
Graphically their renders are quite good.
Rarely has a Love Interests casting given me such a profound feeling of not knowing who to trust. This is one of her strengths giving a feeling that you have to earn her trust and loyalty but if not handled well in the future it could backfire on the romantic plot. By the way developer confirmed it is a harem so I am happy.
Soooo I definitely recommend this as one of the best starting games of the last months.

Review for Ch. 1 Finale v8

For fans of slower burn/story-focused AVNs like myself, this is definitely one to add to the watch pile.

The overview gives a pretty apt description. I like the idea of being a commander in a 'special operations squad" within a sci-fi universe. There's a lot of different aspects that feel constantly at play, and you really don't feel like you can truly trust a single person yet. This has managed to create a lot of intrigue and mystery, and it's really only just getting started.

It's always nice to play as a competent MC as well. Though I think his nickname "The Officer" is more weird than anything, he's still fun to play as. While he's competent, he also clearly doesn't have all the answers. He has shortcomings, but I like that our team is going to seemingly make up for that.

Renders and character models are pretty great, and despite not being able to trust any of them as of now, I still like all the love interests introduced. A bit early to talk about character development and such, but given the quality of everything else I'm not too worried about them becoming dull for lack of a better word.

This isn't without problems though. I get the choice of waiting to add music because of story reasons, but it really needs some ambient noise and sound effects to compensate. It make immersion so much better, especially given that this is a story driven game. I also found the few lewd scenes a bit underwhelming. IMO, not having animations means you gotta be top notch with every other aspect in sex scenes. They aren't horrible but they didn't do a ton for me either. It feels like that aspect was almost underdeveloped in comparison to everything else.

Still, there's a lot of things I like about the game and that's why I'm giving it 5 stars at the end of the day. I hope to see some things get improved, but this is definitely a game I'll go back to as it develops.

    Review of Chapter 1 Finale

    Positives
    Amazing renders
Interesting universe that seems well thought out
Focus on telling a good story
    Lots of mystery

    Negatives
Almost too much mystery, feels like every character may stab the MC in the back at any point

Very good start with a lot of interesting story threads. I am excited to see where this game goes. Some complain about lack of scenes, but I will take interesting story/world building over unearned scenes any day.

Excited to see where this game goes!

As someone who loves sci-fi genre I love the way story is progressing with lots of mysteries, empire and fucking gorgeous models game this deserves all the support and love. While the game is bang on the story and render part the lack of animations would disappoint some and also it's worth mentioning that color of my "sound" has no sound/music as of now although I expect the dev would change it.

This VN gives off heavy Dune vibes with its science fiction setting, political factions and intrigue. The main character does not know who to trust, he keeps getting small surprises from the people he is supposed to rely on, and he is operating in a political web with powerful people operating in the shadows.

The conflict and the world are set up beautifully. The main character is sympathetic , seems competent but is getting overwhelmed by the galaxy. Edge of the seat stuff. Keep up the good work!

The story is just getting under way, but it already has some great potential.

As of the current release (Chapter 1 Part C) the game is fairly light on sexual content. Yes, there are a few sex scenes and some nudity which were quite well rendered, but still fairly light. If that is exclusively what you're looking for then I'd suggest giving the Dev a little while longer.

The renders, as mentioned, were quite nice. While obviously there are some overlapped assets with a number of other games, these were done well enough that it felt more like "Hey, it's that Actress!" than recycled. Especially with the attention shown to fleshing out the backstories and personalities of the LIs, this was a pleasant change from a lot of games.

This is absolutely a visual novel though and a heavy emphasis on the novel side of that. With so much to get introduced to, there is a lot of reading you'll be doing. This isn't one of those narratives where you can gloss over the message and know that it'll just be a variant on "I'm the girl next door who works at a coffee shop". While I didn't find this to be a bad thing, I know that this will also make it not everyone's thing.

As for story and pacing, that can be a little rough. The pacing is considerably slower than a lot of erotic visual novels for the above mentioned reasons. There is just so much world building that the Dev is trying to do and only so much of it can be shown rather than revealed through exposition. They did a fairly good job at making the exposition feel natural for the most part, but there are some clunky spots.

The story, thus far, is top notch. As an espionage story you're brought into this world filled with political maneuvering and half-truths. Everyone you speak to has their own agenda and you can't be sure who is really pulling the strings. The end result is a game that even without the chance for erotic interaction would be interesting to watch play out.

    But it's not perfect.

The MC has their moments. The Dev has tried to explain that there are reasons for a lot of the odd choices which will make sense as the story unfolds and I have no reason to doubt that. However, that doesn't make it any less jarring at times.

Likewise, the limited choices you get to make don't seem to have any real impact on anything. Again, this is really early in the story and I wouldn't expect any major branching storylines just yet. This just creates a little more of an observer role for the reader as opposed to actually playing the MC.

That said, I'm loving what I've seen so far. I'm confident that the Dev will find a way to close that gap between observer and player to a more comfortable level as they get the world and story setup.

Also, best girls are Hilde and Blanche.

It's early on but so far, I'd say it's fantastic, though currently it's more of a KN than VN so far, but the Dev says that will change after chapter 3.

Very pleased there isn't any sound but I understand others want it. So long as I can mute it if the Dev ever adds any. Heck, this might be tied in w the MC music storyline.

Very interesting/different storyline that's just dark enough. The storytelling is great so far. Enough so that I'm on my second play through, lol.

    Nice colors and renders.
The women are very pretty and each have different enough personalities so far. The MC is a decent guy but not so wimpy that he can't pull the trigger.

The first few scenes kind of speed by, but c'mon, you can't go day by day through the guy's whole life. I'll just presume we're jumping ahead a bit and will be appreciative that the author isn't treating me like an idiot.

Not trying to rush the Dev, but I hope there are fairly regular updates rather than stretching them out to, say, yearly updates.... That would ruin the story for me.

Anywho....guess we'll see after another couple updates....... Great job Dev! Keep up the great work!
