So, for those that have a couple grand burning a hole in your pocket, the Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX in on presale at Newegg and presumably a few other large online retailers for $1799, and supposedly will be in stock a week from today (13 August, 2018)...

A few review sites have been featuring 'unboxing' preview articles today. This one that Guru3D did has some pretty pictures of two motherboards, an air cooler and a water cooler, and a 2990WX... and packaging of course!

The 24 core, 16 core, and 12 core Threadrippers will be coming a bit later...

According to several sites, the NDA on the full reviews lifts on 13 August as well.

Oh, and I also spotted this pretty graph that features some benchmarks that AMD did (Tom's Hardware article )...

I wasn't really looking for a 12 core Threadripper, but man this was a 'screaming deal! 12 cores for $249 on Amazon yesterday, and of course they are sold out now.

If I had spotted it yesterday, I certainly would have shared!

*just right now banging head on my keyboard because my under-powered system crashed from running out of memory, losing a 4h render and a scene I was working on in a second DAZ instance* ... (note to self, do not open multiple DAZ instances on a sh*t system)
*reads this post*
*checks money* ... already in debt, still have to pay off the GTX 1070 I got
*drools over Threadripper-hardware-porn*
*frustration*
*cry*
...
*reloads scene to restart rendering*

If Nvidia does not offer a 16 GB graphic card with the next gen for normal consumers I'm not happy with the next gen ... so I hope the rumors are true. I don't even care that much about the actual speed as long as is keeps rendering on the GPU, CPU rendering is just not efficient unless there is no other choice ... highly complicated science stuff for example that requires just to much memory (not DAZ but other iray 3D software).
On my typical scenes I can only have one DAZ instance with iray rendering open ... a second DAZ instance only works as long as I don't enable iray ... doing that crashes the system ... first MSI Afterburner pops up with a message-box "out of memory" and then all programs freeze with some flickering ... apparently the GPU driver tries to recover ... he can't, just not enough VRAM. The render I lost with the last crash consumed 6,5 GB with AI denoise at 1080p. The bad news is that the AI denoiser consumes additional memory, but it's just to good to not use it.

*keeps drooling over Threadripper and waits Nvidia to announce the next-gen GPUs*

Been there with the 'working on scene, and Daz crashes, losing all of my work' thing. I'm sure we all are in the habit of saving regularly, but when you are in the zone, sometimes you forget to save...

Nonetheless, yeah I feel your pain. Don't toss the computer across the room, though, that doesn't seem to help...

Also, I usually save to a new filename when I'm working, when I've made significant changes. Just in case a crash happens and corrupts the save it's trying to make in the process. This is rare, but I've had it happen once or twice.

That denoiser sounds pretty cool. I'm waiting on the 'official' non-beta version release, but good to know we have some new toys coming down the pike.

Edit: Hardware Canucks posted a video showing their 2950X build... no benchmarks, but it's a pretty clean looking build they put together.

Mmmmm, computer porn!

Well the reviews are out.

Short form, the 2990WX is awesome for rendering!

Linux loves it more though - in fact, after noting better Linux scores in a number of benchmarks when compared to results from other sites, Phoronix.com retested the 2990WX with Windows 10 Pro, alongside four different Linux distributions...

Short form, the 2990WX is generally slower in Windows 10 Pro than in Linux. Of course, your app would have to be Linux friendly...

This could mean that Windows isn't fully optimized for the 2990WX as of yet, but if that's the case, whether they bother to 'fine tune' their schedulers for the 2990WX is anyone's guess. I'm still torqued about the 18% GPU memory tax, and that's never been fixed (unless you get a quadro/workstation card).

The 2990WX isn't a gaming CPU. It does fine when gaming, but there are other processors out there that are better optimized for gaming.

Blender just LOVES the Threadripper 2990WX!!!

BTW, overclocking? Yeah 4.0 GHz across all 32 cores is possible, but it sucks lots of power to do so, and of course you probably should be using a liquid cooler at this point. I'm thinking that a slightly less aggressive overclock (say 3.6-3.8) could be interesting, but the 'overclocking analysis' articles aren't out yet, mostly it's been 'well, we tried some basic overclocking, 4.0 GHz across all cores worked but it was a thirsty beast'.

Well, the LN2 guys got a Threadripper 2990WX up to just a hair shy of 6 GHz, and they were able to do a few benchmarks...

Needless to say, they broke a few records (Geekbench 115,579 & Cinebench 8352, others).
