There is a thread over on the Daz forums that gives a good solution to this.

It involves twiddling with some of the exposure settings, as well as changing the white balance (which gives the scene the bluish tint that we associate with night lighting) Changing the exposure settings allows you to have a scene that iRay thinks is well-lit, but which still shows up darker.
Here's something I shot that way.
