Creating a simple 3D character customization. Where to start? How to use the current tools?

Hi!

I want to create a 3D character customization game, in which you just have to chose the features of your characters (breast size, skin color, height, weight...). In short, I want to create a simpler version of for example HS studio so that my players can create their characters.

I saw online many tutorials to do character customization with Unity, but they never tell you how to do so on more realistic humans and moreover never on NSFW stuff.
So I was wondering how to start this project.

From what I understood, I could start with maps from Koikatsu, HS2 or Daz3D or even makehuman and then add options to modify their features in unity.

But I am not sure that is the good way to proceed, and moreover it seems that it leads to problems with the license or the initial tool (KK, HS2 or Daz3D) if I want to create a commercial game. So my first questions are related to the license:
- If it is a free game with a patreon page, will it be OK?
- If I modify the 3D models in blender, how much should I modify them so that it is not theirs anymore?

My second question is related to the steps of such project. I at least want to be able to change the breast size and the weight of the character, the remaining features being textures I could probably modify easily.
What would you recommend in general regarding this project?

1* Is it free when its on patreon? if you have to "pay" one way or another to get access to the game its not free.
So. No to this question. also Daz models require you to have an interactive license or something like that for 3D.

2* You can modify the original content until the cow's come home. it will still be derived work.
meaning you took someones work and modified it.
if someone decides to go after your if you do that. legaly you don't have much standing in a court.

As for your last Q.
if you're going to use unity you need to dive into C# scripting.
learn how to modify the position of the bones, the scale of the model, etc.

I'm not grumpy, I'm just coded that way.

Well, obviously that there's the license problem...

You can not use something without the authorization of its rights owner. So, for assets made for Daz Studio, it mean buying assets under the interactive license. As for the rest, you can just forget about it. The fact that Illusion doesn't exist anymore do not make their intellectual properties free of use, but make it impossible to ask for the authorization to use them, what would have been denied anyway.

So my first questions are related to the license:
- If it is a free game with a patreon page, will it be OK?
Absolutely not.

You do not have the right to use something without the explicit authorization of its right owner, whatever if you make, or not, money through this use.

- If I modify the 3D models in blender, how much should I modify them so that it is not theirs anymore?
If I take your car, how much should I modify it before it's not yours anymore?

The answer is obviously that you can modify it as much as you want, it will never make it "not theirs", and the only thing that would be yours would be the modifications. Yet, this to the condition that the rights owner authorize you to modify its creation and use those modifications.

What would you recommend in general regarding this project?
Honestly? To learn...

Strictly speaking, what you want to do is not too difficult. But the fact that, as you said yourself, "[you're] wondering how to start this project", show that you don't have, yet, the knowledge to even think about starting it.
And by "learn", I mean doing more than just reading few how-to. When you know how to do 3D character customization with Unity, you also know that the process is always the same, whatever if the characters are realistic or not, and if the project is, or not, SFW.

I think you need to ask rather the question if the asset that i used in a game was free.
Most of the time, the asset that was used isn't free. At least with DAZ. I am not so familiar with HS2 though many assets for that come from DAZ.
In the end, someone created that asset (figure, clothing, rooms etc) to create a scene. Nearly 99% of the time, this requires a license, which leads to spending money.
In reality, making a game with changes to appearance of the character (not clothing) would require morphs. You can do them yourself if you know how to. Using morphs from someone else requires mostly a license again.
At least that is my take

Check out cumstar games you can modify the character's shape, clothing etc on the fly in his game. He is pretty active on patreon and seems pretty chill.Join and try reaching out respectfully, idk if he is on this forum.
As for the licensing if your not stacked up on cash you should avoid Daz primary store. Go with secondary stores which most sellers already have the extended commercial licenses included. But you will still need to double check the licenses agreement. If the words are big and convoluted use gpt or gemini if that still fails just email the store/seller.

side note daz store has epic discounts at times but still those interactive licenses are pricey even when discounted.

look into a similar mechanics but as others have stated, if your inquiring how to run fast your probably still crawling and shouldn't skip few a steps. Being a daz user my next step is belnder then the coding route.

also if you have cash make an inquiry to a programmer here for a quote.

Having character genetrator in 3d game requires deep understanding of the chracter generation.

Like, you had a character, can be chubby or lean. So your clothers, airs, genitals etc. This means your characters has lots of morphs, that means you characters are big in price of 3d peformance cost. So you have to optimize them. ETC ETC.

If you have time, I suggest to invest Unreal Meta human. In current state Meta Humans does not have any genitals, boobs etc and lack variety of the clothes. You have to create by yourself (that means you are going to master blender etc)

However other problems including licence was fixed at start.

And for Daz route.

There is a workflow named Daz to Houdini

and following video series teaches you how to create modular characters in unreal using daz characters with houdini.

it cost you 120 buck and you have to deal with houdini, plus daz character licences.
