TL;DR: Make other payment options available such as BuyMeACoffee.

I'm sure at some point this topic has previously been discussed. Nevertheless, I want to communicate my opinion on using Patreon as your sole source of funding.

I'm a bit of a freak about online payments. I often use masked cards from Abine or gift/prepaid cards for purchases and funding (which Patreon does not allow). I'm also leery of using a payment system that has shown to be vulnerable to intrusions. Because of these issues, I have never and will never use Patreon to fund product development of any kind.

That said, I would encourage creators and game studios to consider alternative sources of funding such as BuyMeACoffee. BMAC allows funds to be given without entering personal information. They also allow funding through the types of cards I mentioned. Even if they (BMAC) are comprised the payer's information leads to nowhere.

I have recently played a handful of games that I would like to support and will be contacting the authors directly in that regard. I am hopeful they will take the time to look at Patreon alternatives...at least that will have to be the case if they want my financial contribution.

Buy me a coffee doesn't allow porn.
I don't think that is correct. I did a quick search and found these adult game creators on BMAC, including Philly Games the folks who are making City of Broken Dreamers.

Flying under the radar and complying with T&Cs are two different things.

Strictly prohibited content and activities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Any and every form of adult content, particularly related to nudity, sexual acts and pornography; depictions including but not limited to images, video and literature
Yes, creators can set up an account there and hope that the powers that be are not actively hunting down such content.
But the risk of losing your account still looms (which might have a big impact if it's your "primary" campaign).

I use BMAC for my game. They aren't ok with porn but according to almost every dev I talked/read, as long as you aren't so obvious about what you do they won't mind it. Even with that it isn't a place to get too comfy.

Bitcoin or crypto-currency is the ultimate solution. Just need to wait till it becomes mainstream.

Has anyone ever tried t talk Rendererotica into taking on games? They do comics.
I wouldn't even want to publish anything there, the site is awull, it looks awfull, it's awfull to navigate and a lot of stuff they sell is awfull (not everything, but you get the picture).
Subscribestar is okay, they are not as good as patreon in comparison, but adult content is allowed and I had no problem so far. It's just missing support by fans.

Looking at their (SubscribeStar's) ToS it states they accept prepaid cards, so that's worth looking into. Thanks.
As a small new creator, I can explain why Patreon is big and the rest of the things are not. It is not because creators prefer it. It is because you supporters only use it. Yes, there are people like you who are concerned with their privacy, there are also people who just hate Patreon and would rather use anything else. But the number of such people is very small. Since I started development on Fetish Locator I maintain tow pages - Patreon and SubscribeStar. As of now, I have 144 supporters on Patreon and 1 supporter on SubscribeStar. That is why many big developers don't even invest time in another platform.
