Please correct me if I am wrong but it seems to me that the slime is the MC's childhood best friend and identifies as male. They can just look female for the MC's preference.

In the altrernate dimension that's true... in the fantasy universe the slime meets MC for the guild introduction for the first time and normally uses a neutral pronounce.
Not to mention they flirt with MC from day 1, but only after a combined mission are they offering to take a female/futa shape.
