Basically, I'm just curious about people's tendencies towards naming their character in a game. Do you just leave it with whatever the default is, if there is one? Do you come up with something each time, perhaps to fit with the setting of whichever game you happen to be playing? Do you just use your own name, or one that you like? Do you make any exceptions for any of these?
For my part, I prefer to use my own name, but... I have an extremely common name, as in, a name that's been among the most popular English names for literal centuries... So I occasionally end up having to make concessions to avoid weirdness. The number of times I've had to rename my character after finding that there's another character in the game that was given the same name... Well, it's not a lot, but it's happened often enough that I've taken notice. Sometimes it's not a big deal, but sometimes it leads to such a disconnect that it's unacceptable.
Anyways, yeah, I'm just interested to hear folks' feelings on naming their character(s). Oh, and if any devs want to chime in on their thought process for how they choose NPC names in their games, that'd be interesting too!
