The explanation given in the opening dialogue of the game is that the player character (Callum) went to the countryside to finish school. His mother expressed regret that she had to work and could not go with him, but did indeed suggest that she might visit.

My mistake. Long time since I played from beginning - confused it with another favourite of mine where MC gets kicked out (Dad caught him and mom)and goes to live with other family....can't for the life of me recall the name of the game right now.
