About the Game
Spellcollared (working title) is a retro-style RPG with visual novel elements. The story takes heavy inspiration from anime and light novel tropes, and focuses on having a capable and competent MC, a harem full of more realistic girls with personalities and their own goals, and male domination. This is purely a one person hobbyist project with no plans for monetization yet, but once it’s further along I might solicit donations. My aim is to make a good game and story with some erotic themes. Porn is an included part of the game, but not necessarily the main focus all the time. For many people it will probably be too slow of a burn, but I like some story with my sex. Here are a few of the planned systems and features:
Attributes
Each time the player levels up they gain a point they can spend in one of six attributes. Physique, charisma, arcana, faith, subterfuge, and insight. Attributes are requirements for the various ways you solve problems. For example, a player with a high subterfuge skill might complete an objective by picking a locked door while another player with a high charisma talks their way past a guard. Attributes also sometimes allow you to select special options in dialog choices. Currently attributes cap out at 10.
Affection Levels and Erotic Scenes
Each recruitable companion within the game will have an affection of 0 - 4 hearts. Every time a companion gains a heart, a corresponding erotic scene is unlocked with them. Erotic scenes are text-based but each will be accompanied by a couple of CGs with an anime art style. Affection is raised by completing side quests and reaching certain main story landmarks.
Quests and Experience
There are two types of quests in the game, story quests and side quests. Story quests advance the main storyline of the game while side quest give erotic scenes with companions, unique items, and other optional rewards. Many side quests will be restricted behind attribute prerequisites. For example, you might need 3 points in arcana before you can take a quest to help a mage apprentice. Quests are the only way to gain experience and level up. There is no grinding battles.
Pixel Art Visuals
My plan is to commission 2DCGs for the erotic scenes from an outside artist, while all other visuals in the game will be pixel art. No default RPGM sprites and no Daz/etc 3D renders. I’m only just learning pixel art, so expect gradual improvements over time. Many of the sprites and graphics shown in screenshots are still placeholders and will be redone at some point.
Story Synopsis
The MC (you) are just getting off work after a stressful week crunching to meet a deadline. On your way home, you stop into an unfamiliar looking bookstore. A tiny brick building that’s sandwiched between highrises, as if the owner is a stubborn old-timer who refuses to sell their land no matter what. While there, you stumble upon a strange and ancient-seeming tome kept hidden away in a back room. Soon you are engrossed in the words within those coarse, yellowed pages. You suffer a tiny papercut as you read on. A single drop of blood falls and spreads across the page like crimson ink. This causes an unknown magic power to activate and transport you inside the setting of the book.
You awaken within the body of Alistair Dale. Alistair is the black sheep of the imperial family of the Garnet Dominion. Infamous for throwing lavish and degenerate parties, lusting after the nobles' daughters, and squandering his father’s wealth, Dale’s reputation as a childish fool is well known among the aristocracy. Dale’s father, the emperor, had finally had enough of his son’s antics. He severed him from his inheritance and sent him away to a small, neighboring kingdom called Literra as an “ambassador” so that he would be someone else’s problem.
This is where the main chapters of the game begin. Alistair, with the memories of your past life, works his way up within the Kingdom of Literra to recover his reputation and becomes embroiled in underground conspiracies, political schemes, and arcane secrets. All of this is accompanied by Alistair’s one and only follower, a cambion (half-demon) handmaiden, “Six”. Their relationship is initially hostile, but gradually through the course of the game they become inseparable partners. Together they assemble a harem of knights, witches, demi-humans, priestesses, monster-girls, and more. At the same time Alistair learns to use magic and investigates the truth of this world along with the “real” world outside the book, finding that they aren’t as disconnected as they initially appear.
State of the Project
I’ve been working on the game an hour or two a day for a couple months now. To be honest there is next to no playable content so far. At this point I’ve got most of the mechanics in place and made a rough draft of the story, but I’ve yet to start making any actual quests and environments besides an opening tutorial/prologue. The first playable demo is still a few months away at least, but here are some screenshots of the current state. Let me know what you’d like to see in the game. Thanks for reading, peace.
