Discord is entering the creator subscription space (competition for Patreon)

It seems like they're essentially trying to replace the Patreon-Discord integration that many content creators already use, with a 90/10 split.

Given the generally uncertain nature of being a dev here and working with Patreon, do you guys think this could displace them as our go-to subscription service?

YOU MAY NOT MONETIZE CONTENT OR A COMMUNITY ASSOCIATED WITH ANY OF THE FOLLOWING
  1. Sexually explicit content, whether hosted on Discord or linked from other services.
    1. Content may not contain nudity, explicit sexual acts, or content created for the purpose of sexual gratification or arousal. Exceptions for non-sexual nudity may be made for context that is educational, artistic, or newsworthy at Discord’s sole discretion.

My impression is that Discord doesn't want anything to do with us, unfortunately.

The only competition for Patreon are still Subscribestar, Boosty (Russian) and sites like that.

OnlyFans & Fansly could be legitimate competition too if devs would start using them.

I'm not grumpy, I'm just coded that way.

While declared in the USA, and having a letterbox there, Subscribestar is officially owned by someone living in Russia. Not that I care, but since you precised for Boosty.

Didn't devs say that they left patreon for Subscribestar, so as to have more freedom with their work and create more sexualized things that patreon banned?

But if it is based on the US, then both patreon and subscribestar should fall under the same jurisdiction when it comes to mature content, no? So how come subscribestar devs can host more contentious content and be fine while in patreon they were not?

The limiting factor isn't US law, it's payment providers (PayPal, Visa, Amex). Subscribestar doesn't use PayPal, but i expect it'll get hit on the rest of the banking stuff if it gets big enough.

All of this goes back to operation choke point, and us govt move to destroy the business environment for otherwise legal entities (gun sales, payday loans, pornography, etc)

Twitter is looking to add payment services, and they're about the only supportive social media for porn-devs; that's definitely something I'm keeping an eye on.

I think if porn gaming gets even bigger more people will want a piece of this pie and so more services will appear in time.
Even Steam wants a piece after all, that's not something the competition is going to ignore.
Problem is still finding a good enough service, one that gives devs maximum creative freedom.
Well, for now substar works just fine. Although, i'm not sure i'd want to deal with Russians, or Chinese, or even Americans.
Too many annoying fucking laws and cave-ats. Ideally, i think a service appearing somewhere in Europe would be nice.:coffee:

Well, the week after I created my Patreon page, I opened a Discord server for my game and went all out doing the whole integration thing with the Patreon Tiers, etc. Then 2 days later, some bot closed my Discord and deactivated it. It took me over a week to even get a response from Discord and by the time they reactivated it, I said "Fuck this!" and I removed any integration between the two services. I still keep the Discord server, because I know a lot of Patrons prefer using it, but I won't put any more effort into it. I never did get a straight answer why it was deactivated. About the only thing I could find was that my subscribing to the Ren'py Discord may have triggered the bot (Why? Who the fuck knows!)

I'm also not impressed with all the hacked Discord accounts I see and the stupid Nitro Spam, etc. As well, Discord seems more intent that even Patreon on controlling what people think or say - and - they have at times arbitrarily enforce two factor authentication on accounts so you have to give them a valid phone number.

Basically.. not a snowballs chance in hell I would ever entrust Discord with something connected to my finances.

I also think Discord is highly overrated.:coffee:

Agreed. Even if discord did allow for "nsfw creators;" they're still notoriously hypocritical and inconsistent with how they deal with users/servers on a day-to-day basis. People complain about patreon; but the fact is discord is just as bad when it comes to how they will shut down people/pages at the most random of whims from their trust and safety team. (plus y'know...same payment processors. So why do people think it would be different? lol)

Sounds irrelevant to us due to the no-NSFW rule. And since Patreon takes 5-12% without the SFW-only restriction, I don't see an advantage over Patreon either.

As for Twitter, I don't expect it to still exist in 2024 if Musk keeps running it like he is now. That's not a stable platform to make porn games on.
