I recently completed Melty's Quest, and realized that I actually kinda enjoyed it for reasons beyond it's lewd nature. It was a nice, complete, clean, and short JRPG with tight mechanics, and modern conveniences. I was reminded of my time with LoQO and realized that the short duration and smaller world actually strengthened the experience of the whole.
I may as well note that other NSFW recommendations are also welcome. ;D
- For it's relatively short completion time it offers an excellent newgame+ system that encourages replays with new content to discover, collection books to complete, and boosts to carry over into a new game.
- The game was designed with modern philosophies, so many annoying mechanics from older games are absent, and newer user-friendly ideas are included.
- The open world is smaller than your standard 40+ hour JRPG, but it's fully fleshed out and generally everything is placed with purpose. Older zones and dungeons are not forgotten and find purpose even once greater sources of gold and exp are discovered.
- The items and equipment throughout the game are designed deliberately so that your inventory is less of a bottomless disorganized pit. Crafting reagents take no bag space and are neatly organized in a list, while the modest handful of weapons and equipment are few enough that your equipment menu is effectively turned into another completion checklist.
- Bosses and encounters utilize classic turn based mechanics, yet also feel akin to puzzles. Instead of grinding levels for hours so that later you can mash attack while equipped with the bigger stick, many bosses have weaknesses that can be exploited, or interact in interesting ways with your skills.
- Despite being an RPG maker game, there is a distinct level of quality that sets it apart from the horde of projects made by your average hobbyist.
