With very few exceptions, music is badly chosen/applied and overused in the games here imo. Usually it's the first thing I silence after 5 or so minutes.
I leave effects/ambiance/voices at 30% usually unless they're absolutely terrible. For me they're what sell a scene in vns because I find the music terrible.
Generally speaking, most vns suffer in the sound department imo.

Game gets launched. Mute is applied. I never discover if a game has the ability to make noise.

If I want ambience or background, I'll use my own library to supply it. That said, I heard someone else playing Love and Magic, and the background music is appropriate and decent if a trifle overloud in dramatic scenes so I suppose some game devs make good choices.
Ditto.

Also if I see "This game requires sound" in dev notes or overview, it goes onto the ignore pile.

A good soundtrack/ambient sound is one of the hardest things to pull off in a game. But when done well, it definitely enhances the experience.

Unfortunately, most devs have to rely on free songs and have no experience with chosing soundtracks. When you have to be your only coder, artist, animator, and sound designer, it's normal that some areas aren't that great. The good thing is that the player can always just mute the sound, if it's that bad.

I myself enjoy seeing game devs play with music, ambient sound, sound effects, etc. It makes the game better and I think some devs are getting quite good at that. Hopefully more devs can learn from the successful ones and start improving the music/sounds on their own games.

Im easily entertained by the low quality music that are often used in NSFW game. The only times I hear music that are actual bangers are from, obviously, the ones with a budget. I like to link ppl to a random song and when they compliment them only then do I reveal that theyve been listening to hentai music this whole time ku ku ku!

I wish I could say this, but the first time I launch a game, the music is generally mixed so loud that there's a paniced rush to find the volume controls.

Seriously, why is the music so loud? I prefer to play with headphones to mute out house noises (thin walls + loud housemates), so the music bores straight into my brain at the volume's y'all mix it at. Professional games never do this. I haven't touched the volume on any of the AAA games I've bought in the last 3 months, but I have to do it on EVERY SINGLE GAME that gets put here. Is this a Ren'py thing? Is it a total lack of developer empathy for our ears? Is it outright contempt for your players?

Music is great if it's scene appropriate tracks that are original and not some royalty free default tracks everyone uses. Not many games succeed. As someone above said, the soundtrack provides the majority of emotional impact in a lot of movie scenes. It takes real effort to pull it off though.

The random music that loops indefinitely is worse than no music. Also, it would be great if I never hear that RPGM lewd tune again.

Mix of both, and that goes beyond NSFW titles. Some bits need music, some bits need silence. As C_Cullen said:

Proper music would be great and I'm sure people wouldn't mind. Problem is... erotic games just don't have "proper music", so it's annoying and distracting more often than not due to bad choice of said music.
I like to have the sound on, but if it isn't very good, I'd rather have it off completely. It's just a guess, but I think most people in the thread who say they tend to turn off the sound as soon as the game launches, do so mostly due to experience. Because most of the time, the sound in erotic games is terrible.

If a game allowed you to use your own music, and associate a tone/mood for each song, would you use it?

Example:
1. In game, you click a button and a window opens allowing you to pick a song on your computer.
2. Then right after, it asks you to specify the mood for the song you selected, example: "Combat Intense", "Erotic Slow", "Erotic Intense", "Tense Ambient". You wouldn't even have to specify music for all categories, just the moments you're interested in.
3. DONE

Now your own music is in the game and associated with the correct mood. Would you use this feature, or is that too much work? I think if you really like the game, then you'd be motivated to use this feature, but if the game sucks, you wouldn't even bother, am I on the right track?

I've been working in movies postproduction sound industry for the past 15 years.

My sound is always on... and I'm almost always disappointed.

A good sound is an excellent way to get yourself in the vibe, in the character, in the moment. It's the 3rd dimension you can't reach otherwise. You are not supposed to notice it. It should be the "make it real" tool.

But as most people have absolutely no idea of what they're doing, and also think that it is an easy matter, it often ends up being the same "love scene Japanese banjo" (still don't understand that music track) and "close_as_feck_birds_.mp3".

High quality product will always aim to immerse the player.
Ambient and other sound is absolutely necessary if you aim to immerse the player.:coffee:

Music is very important, especially if there is no voice acting. Plus it stays in the head for a long time, you can immediately recall scenes 10 years later once you hear familiar tune. But for that music should be good... And I'm yet to play a western game with good music. Some japanese ones do have great OSTs though.

at first i used to play mute too, now after a few games i liked the sound of the effects, i could never go back to a mute game. I don't like the dialogues between characters, I prefer to read them and not listen to them, but in the sex scenes, I really like having the sound effects.
over time I have re-evaluated many games from the past that were completely silent and if they seemed top to me before, now I don't even consider them anymore.

Not really. I can use my own music if I need to. Voice Overs and Music are things I can live without, when it comes to these games. I might check out the music if it's in the game or gets added later on, though.

Everyone has their own preferences. You will have half wanting music & VOs, while the other half couldn't care less lol. I say, let the Dev do what he/she feels is needed. Everything else can be done after ze game is finished, it can be extra dextra you knowah?

I think good music can absolutely set the tone of a game, same for good audio in general.

Many games are remembered in large part due to their soundtracks; Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Undertale, the Sonic series, Final Fantasy series, Metal Gear Rising, etc.

For those saying they've never heard good music in a porn game, I'd like to submit two of the songs from our own game; they may not be everyone's cup of tea, but some may like them.

I think the overall quality of audio in adult games is getting better year by year, so if you're still muting games, I'd say at least give it a shot to have the mute off for the first 10 or 20 minutes, you may be surprised.

good music can make really good impact in the game, but not many adult games have good musics...
just generic slap slap sounds makes me avoid the game...

If it is just music for the sake of music no. But if it is part of the experience of the game yes. Like if you are playing a game and go into a nightclub and night club music starts great. Walking along a road and their is road sounds being played great. But just music playing all the time no.
