In Japanese RPG Maker games, I tend to use four stars or other obvious symbols as my name so that it stands out among the rest of the runes. Like in real life, it's nice to kinda ignore everything until someone mentions my character's name.
If there's more than one character I need to keep track of, like in an eramaker game with offspring, I have a small stable of name-like gender-netural non-connotative character compositions that I can arbitrarily assign. Most of them are real names with one letter changed, like "Teb," because I'm lazy and creativity is hard.
In other games, I'd almost always rather use the default unless it's something really stupid. So I'd rather there actually be a default name, and it's a nice bonus to be able to change it if I think it's asinine. If the dev really wants to have a character named Qeef Ravenlord or Dongy Jim Autumnbottom or Ishmael Mobydick that's their business, but it sure would be nice to ignore it.
(Too, I rarely play games that actually use real, modern names in English, because that setting bores me tremendously.)
