I had the same problem, I think you cant use your past version saves. You need to start over, if you are in hurry just use save editor for the new saves.

Unfortunately you are correct they die no matter what actions you take

Just keep losing until you are given the weapon and armor to beat her after that it is just the usual grind if you are still having difficulty
