Use uBlock Origin and NoScript when browsing such sites.
Instead of downloading the links through your browser, paste them into a download manager (I've even seen a few filehosts that, curiously, will say the file is down/act like it doesn't exist when loaded through a browser, but still allow downloads through a download manager, fichier is one that does this).
Then, when you download anything potentially questionable, load it through virustotal.
