This is very strange.
Try restarting the game and switching the language in the settings to English from the very beginning.
The game should be in English by default

Nope, when I click either language option it freezes for a moment and resets the whole game back to the menu, booting me from the game and resets all preferences to default.

Yes, it really does reset all progress (except saves) and you can start playing without any problems.
The thing is that if after switching the language to English you load a save in which Russian was used, then the language in game is rewritten back to Russian.
Yes, I understand that it works crookedly, but it is better this way than without the ability to change the language at all.
(And I didn't think that someone could play part of the game in one language and then change it to another)
I recommend starting the game over without using old saves. Using saves from previous versions can break the game.

I started Nagatoro's quest "Kill the goblins in the forest", watched the beginning of the scene in the farm village, decided it wasn't worth doing the quest and backed out of accepting it.

Wow.. this game royally sucks.. over and over timed 4 direction key presses.. it does not fucking end.. it just keeps going. this games sucks!

1. No damn direction in game what to do
2. Random fucking battles people just attack you even in city for no reason
3. Battles suck it press correct fucking direction of arrows in a timed limit but not once it's fucking repeatedly! I was like on around 4 and it was still fucking going.. AWFUL
4. 75% of the damn game is this awful mini game.

It's an awful game it has no direction it's like some fucked up dating sim with an awful boring combat system.

Yeah, game could definitely do without the minigames. People are here for the adult part of the adult game, not the game part. There is a reason most of the stuff on here is a VN.
