Environment assets for VN's.

Hi all,

I have been working on a VN/game for quite some time. I am pretty confident in my rendering skills, and can code to the level I need to (game will be using Ren'py game engine).

What I am looking for is recommendations for environment assets. Do I just use Daz store assets, hoping they have not been used in 100 other games. Do I put some time into a 3dmodeling program like Blender and make my own. Just so you know what type of game I am looking to make, it will be set in current day. The game will move between most continents, so varying architecture is essential. Office type assets, housing (and no the MC is not a teenager who somehow lives in a house a millionaire would be jealous of). The game is intended to be as grounded in reality as I can make it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the replies folks. Maybe I should have made myself more clear. I have access to and use a lot of hdri's. What I am looking for is environments, or maybe more specifically architecture. Houses, apartments, offices and the like. Enough locations to populate a pretty decent size world, and as mentioned, from different countries would be great. As I said, trying to avoid the overused locations weall recognize from multiple other vn's.

Since we are on a pirate forum and I kinda assume you dont wanna drop several hundred bucks per location, I would have a look at . It has most more well known Blender kitbash sets from like Kitbash3D or BigMediumSmall. It has a lot of stuff for Unreal Engine as well but not sure how easily you could export them into Blender. is another site you can have a look, think it has a fair amount of sets from Evermotion and all. Most of them are 3DS max ones, but its fairly easy to export from there into Blender. Vfxmed doesnt require a subscription to their upload server (you prob just spend a day or two downloading a set), but Cgpersia kinda does.

Last site you could have a look at is . I think it's mostly asian made models, mostly 3DS max, and most of their materials used are fairly lackluster, but the models themselves are very detailed. Don't know how much their architecture assets are usefull for you (most of them are a bit weird), but its great for interior assets. And they use Gdrive to share so dont need a subscription to an upload website

Thanks Synx - I will check them out. Even though the jolly roger flies proudly on this site, all the assets I use in my game I will purchase. Thanks for the input.

I'd suggest you need to follow multiple paths.

Initially trying to find what you want in the daz store first will generally be much easier to start from because it is a basis that already "works". It's true that a many Daz assets are very overused in existing games - i'd be happy to never see the "i13 Clothing Boutique" again. But then again, there are literally 100000+ items in the store - that's a *lot* of content to dig through to find hidden Gems.
The next level is working with daz store assets to kitbash stuff, and work with various camera angles will pay rewards because you'll get some unique looking scenes at relatively low effort. Swapping materials, adding variouly scaled cubes, using geometry editor to hide or delete parts, reassigning groups of vertexes to a new surface and making it transparent with the material cutout opacity control, intersecting environent or prop assets from different packages... there's many ways to mix it up.

For blender, it's possible to find a lot of arch-vis Blender assets, but i'd generally say that stuff that is rarely very "lifelike" or "lived-in" compared to the pre-load scenes you find in many of the Daz store offerings. And Blender stuff requires a bunch of work after importing to Daz in order to setup all the materials, so the environment or prop really needs to be worth it.

And of course there might be times where falling back to modelling something in blender yourself and pulling it in is the best choice. I've certainly done it before

Thanks Osanaiko,

I have been coming to the same conclusion myself. As this will be the first VN I will be releasing I think I will take the path of least resistance and stick with the Daz store assets for now. This will allow me to release the game, test the waters, see if my style is popular enough to warrant the extra effort going forward.
