The dialogue in this is terrible. At the best of times, it's bland; serviceable to read and progress the story, but failing to evoke any form of empathy or feelings towards the actions or characters from you, the reader. Very direct and to the point; stuff like "Wanna do X thing together?" "Yes, how about tomorrow at YY:ZZ" "Yes. See you then."; very mechanical, just in a going through the motions way. Unfortunately, that's when the dialogue is at its strongest. When it's at its weakest, that's when the game really fucking sucks. And it happens in certain subjects in an annoying, recurring way.
Here's an example: The women in this game will often say something along the lines of how it's "hard to trust new people". First off: What the fuck am I reading, Fallout? They talk like they're living permanently in the setting of The Purge. But hey - that's fine, and I'd understand this, IF... it was applied equally to all characters. It is, of course, not! Our lovable MC is exempt from this rule, from all women. But it's worse! Not only is our MC exempt from this rule, he also doesn't abide by it at all! Very early in the game, our MC meets a new chick. We're then told by a different character very shortly after that the reason this chick is so antisocial and set aside from everyone else is because she, allegedly, killed her father when she was young. Our MC's response to this is, and I shit you not, this is a direct quote, word by word, of the Visual Novel Dialogue:
"That's crazy, why though?"
Ah, yes. That is, indeed, very crazy. After this incredible delivery and emotionally-charged line towards the shocking revelation, we're then met with: "She seems like an interesting girl so I'd like to at least try talking to her." Natalie can't go on tinder because it's hard to trust new people. We can talk to the girl who killed her father because she's interesting. Cool!
Or how about this one chick called Aria whom we spent a grand total of 5 dialogue boxes with before she gets whisked away and told that her brother was murdered? Well, worry not - she returns on that very same day and does not only go skinny dipping with the protagonist whom she met less than 4 hours ago, the MC then ALSO rails her on the family couch that very same night. Hope that helps you with your grief, girl!
That aside, is this game all bad? No. There's some interesting overall plot and I like the overall theme with the superpowers. Is this game fun to read? Absolutely fucking not. The girls are cute and the renders are ok, but they're all diferent degrees of MC-addicted and they throw themselves at the MC with little to no buildup, purpose, reason, or drama. It's hard to care about a good overall mystery plot when you botch every character into a blurry mess of tropes and idiocy as they throw themselves onto the MC.
All in all, it's a shame the writing is this bad. I genuinely hoped for better.
