Good morning,
I'm having a problem using the viewer.
Pressing ALT-U doesn't work.
Given that I'm using:
Windows 11
RenPy 8.4.1.25072401
Python 3.13.2
I created a new project to test the viewer.
I downloaded the AONvve_3.00.04.zip file and unzipped it into the test game directory.
I started the project.
Pressing ALT-U or any other key combination doesn't display the viewer.
Pressing SHIFT-D displays the developer menus.
What did I do wrong?

Yeah, seems in versions 8.4 and above of Ren'Py, the viewer doesn't load.

Yeah, I'm aware of this, sometimes it fix the issue, sometimes it doesn't. And it's something that turn me crazy, really and deeply crazy... :mad:


Let me explain (in case some reader have a marvelous idea):

You start/load the game, and you see the first menu, telling you that the tool is enabled, and letting you either continue directly to the game, or edit the tool configuration.

But the thing is that this fucking screen use the fucking "AONmc_buttonFixed" style!!!!
When you are on this screen, the style "AONmc_buttonFixed" fucking exist!!!!

Then an instant later it purely disappear...
But it's not all the styles that disappear. Some are still available, like "AONmc_button" that is the base for the missing style. They are defined at the same time, the only difference is the that the disappearing one have a fixed size...
But other styles have a fixed size, "AONmc_vscrollbar" by example. And it doesn't disappear...

This really turn me crazy, because there's just no rational reason for some styles to disappear and while others stay. Of course there's a cause, but I passed hours and hours on this, and totally fail to found it.
And, obviously, without understanding why some style disappear, I can't use a dirty fix, like forcing the definition of the style once again at a moment or another.
Strictly speaking it could works, but there's nothing ensuring that what cause the disappearance will not be triggered later in the game, or, worse, later in just some games, breaking everything again.

All this being said, I haven't lost all hopes.
If really I can't find why it happen, I guess that I'll fallback to defining the style in a rpy file. Normally it should remove all issues.
But it will be a pain in the ass to do this because the styles are partly computed in real time, depending on the screen resolution, and partly rely on multi-persistent configuration values. And I'm also not totally sure that it will not cause some backward compatibility issues; but this last point is less important than all the future version breaking the tool.

Hey, don't stress yourself with this. Hope your health has been doing better this year and you have had some time with your family. IDK if what they're doing is pertinent to your work at all, but Madeddy and joelurmel have been doing a lot of work decoding 8.4.1 for the un'ren project in that thread.

I don't, but I also have to find a solution because it's not at 54yo that I'll stop to be stubborn :giggle:


Hope your health has been doing better this year and you have had some time with your family.
I probably still have some adjustment to do with my life (once again, not this easy to radically change after so many years of bad habits), but globally I'm fine, better in regard of my heath than I have been since a really long time. And, yes, the "us time" with my family help a lot on this, thanks.

Don't really help on what block me, but once I'll have this fixed I'll also have to test it with the 8.4 version and it can help to find the source of possible issues.

So...

First thing first, I am an idiot. I noticed some times ago that the styles issue only happen when you load a save file. And dumb me was so focused on the problem itself, that he didn't understood that he found a hot fix workaround.

For anyone having the Exception: Style '[name depend on the game]' does not exist. error:
  • Quit Ren'Py;
  • Launch the game again;
  • Start the game;
  • Pass the tool introduction screen;
  • Load your save file.
The styles being already defined, both the game and the tool should works without problem.
You only need to do this once by play. Therefore, as long as you don't quit Ren'Py, you can load as many save files as you want.


This being said, once I understood this, I decided to change a bit my mind, and to test the solutions I thought about for the 8.4.1 issue. And doing this, I realized that the style issue do not happened when I load a save file.
Therefore, it is purely an issue with Ren'Py 8.3.7. I'll do more test to ensure that it's the only version having it, but it's already a step in the right direction. All I need now is to find an automated way to workaround this.
It seem that it's due to the config.after_load_callbacks, so I possibly have a way to do this. I just need to test it deeper, then find a not too dirty way to limit this to the version 8.3.7; relying on native feature as much as possible staying the best approach.


Since I'm back to work, just being on a day off today (the day it rain, lucky me...), count one to two weeks before an update. It will depend on how long it will take me to find a clean solution, and what deeper tests with the 8.4.1 will tell me.

It took me a bit more time than expected, mostly because I clearly underestimated my free time now that I changed my life habits. But it's done, the tool have been updated and, normally, all the reported issues have been solved.

Curious users will note that there's now three sub folders into the "AON-packages" directory. This is due to the Python version change.
I can't let the none compiled Python files, because some people would starts to tweak them, then reports issues without telling that they changed the code, and even less what they changed. So I had to find a way for the compiled files to match the Python version. Among all the possibilities, the less dirty was to include the compiled files for all the used version of Python, then tell Ren'Py to import the correct ones depending on the Python version used.

As always, I tested the tool with many version of Ren'Py and different games, but my tests only worth what I can think about, and limits to the games I used for them. So if you encounter an issue, or something that feel weird, don't hesitate to say it.

I'll look at this, but I can already tell that it's something weird because:

This part is 100% my fault.
I guess that I've been distracted when working on the save security net and, after a look at the code it happened that I totally forgot to clean the bogus value I used to test it.

But the thing is that everyone have this, including me. I'll not over estimate the use of this tool, but it's at least a hundred games that have been played with the last version and... well, it confirm that the security net works since none seen the error.

Yet here you are, encountering it... As I see it, this mean that there's a value from the game that prevent the pickling. Reason why, once the security net removed myself from the data to save, the save still fail. The rest being Ren'Py searching a culprit, and pointing to me because it's what will come first in alphabetical order.
But in the same time, if it wasn't something triggered by my tool, everyone would be complaining...

If it's possible, can you try without URM to see if the error persist?
Not that I assume that it's the culprit, but it will shorter the list of possibilities.

Like I said, this keeps happening, even with URM taken out of the picture. Even a simple rollback causes it to lock up.
Or better said, the caption gets the "(Not Responding)" tagged to the caption title.
The one time I got that exception was the reason I took AONvve out of the picture to see what happened, and that's when everything started working without either lockups or this exception.

UPDATE:

Something weird is going on, ran it from the SDK (7.3.5) and no lockup, no exception, nothing.

Ran it from the game executable from scratch.
First save took a long time but did save.
Second save, it locked up again.

Killed the task, again ran it from sratch (killed every save file and persistent in both locations [saves folder and appdata])
First save again completed, again with a big delay.
Then exited the game (configured to create a save of the point in game where exited) and bam, it locked up again...

However, I remembered you told me how to create a log file... and even though the game became unresponsive, the logfile had the same entry as the one time I got the exception in-game. But it also had an entry just before about an exception when creating a save file (autosave?). It also turns out the content is created during the first save, which completed after the big delay. So, the lockup when exiting didn't add anything new to the logfile.

On a hunch I compared the mentioned .rpym file with the one from the SDK, but they are identical.
What surprised me most is that when running it from the SDK, there's absolutely no issue.

This is handled by Ren'Py. The part triggering this error is in a try block that will discard any exception.
Normally the __getattr__ magic method should throw an exception, instead of returning None like it did, but it doesn't really matters. It's just that the exception discarded will be different, than the one PyTom through about, but like the block operate blindly, it's still discarded and doesn't break Ren'Py.

Right after this the code force a second attempt to save. And as I said previously, by itself this part works as expected.

But __00 AONsaved2 shouldn't anymore be among the savable variables. Yet according to the whole save process, it's not just that Ren'Py guess that it can be the cause, it's explicitly pickle pointing it as being the cause.

I'm just 99% sure right now, but there's high chance that it point to the save security net being actually broken.

Who know, if it's actually because of this that it works with the SDK it will at least works as temporary fix.
I should have said this upfront, I'm so used to have config.developer (and config.console) enabled I totally forgot to mention it.

So it's another thing that differ from the SDK and the game itself...
It probably doesn't look like it, but it help me to know this.

This game does not like AONvve. If it doesn't lock up when saving (which is most of the times), it throws this error.
An update:

I played the game from starts to stop four times. I did it with and without the developer mode enabled, and did it again with a version of the tool that don't have the test part that I forgot to remove.
In all case I was able to save without a single problem.

But there's something wrong with the game. I don't know why, but it's really slow to save and, more important, fucking slow when it rollback, to the point that two rollback in a row totally freeze the game.
I searched in my archives and found a dozen games with the save version of Ren'Py, tried with the same version of the tool, and didn't encountered those two issues.

So I'll do a shoot in the dark and try another way to strengthen the save security net, but no guaranty that I'll succeed.
