Hmm, looks like an issue with the Python 2.x/3.x compatibility. I'll look at this.

And the directory itself?

Plus, does it works if you move the rpy files directly into the "game" directory?
Moving the .rpy files under game does not change anything.

I've done some additional investigation:
- I downloaded PC version of the test app and AON 3.01.02 to a win10 machine
Runs fine and AON loads every time
- I downloaded a fresh copy of the PC version of the app to a Mac
- Re-built PC version with SDK 8.3.7 (app I'm using for test was 8.0.3)
- Added AON to re-build and launched with SDK
AON starts on 1st load every time.
Made some save later in game AON continues to load
- Built a Mac version from the PC version using 8.3.7
- Added AON and launch mac app - no AON
- Launched mac app from 8.3.7 SDK - no AON
- PC version still starts AON when lanced with SDK on Mac
- Went back to PC and built mac app, added AON, and launched with SDK - no AON
- PC version on PC still bings up AON.
- I tested a couple of other 8.xx games with same outcome

My suspicion at this point is there is an assumption about file layout in the AON code. The above shows (I believe) that its not dependent on mac execution, per se. THe SDK just runs the game folder from its own running engine copy. Since the PC SDK launched the mac build on the PC but no AON.

I have attached a screenshot of the mac file layout for a RenPy game. The game directories are identical except in PC land the save foder is under game and in mac land its elsewhere in the users private library folders. In no of the scenarios above where any AON log files produced so I'm not sure what more I can do. If you have an additional file I could add that would produce a trace of some kind I would be glad to do that.

Moving the .rpy files under game does not change anything.
What once again point to a rights issue.
Ren'Py automatically compile all ".rpy" files he found on the "game" directory and sub directories. And it's shown in you screenshot that it's doing it fine. And the only reason for it to not do the same with the ".rpy" files from the tool, especially when they are directly in the "game" directory, is a question of rights.

My suspicion at this point is there is an assumption about file layout in the AON code.
As said, if it was the case, you would have the ".rpyc" files and an exception telling you that Ren'Py can't find one of the ".py" files.
The ".rpy" files are in the "AON-packages" folder since the first 3.0 pre release in 2022. If it prevented Ren'Py to access and compile them, you wouldn't have been able to use the tool before. So it's something else. And the only rational answer is an issue with the rights.

I'll see if I can force them to a correct value in the archive for the future update.

If you have an additional file I could add that would produce a trace of some kind I would be glad to do that.
It would change nothing since Ren'Py do not proceed the ".rpy" files.
