Pick one direction with your story, and stick with it. The more vastly differing options you try to put into games like this, the more work you create for yourself. There are a lot of abandoned games because of the variety the devs tried to put in them. They get sick of trying to keep the multiple story lines straight so they give up. Tell the one story you want to tell, not five stories in one game. If there is another story you want to tell, make it into another game. The characters will only be cardboard if you write them that poorly.

Even if it's still too early to tell from 20 minutes of current version - this is already good start, when MC is not complete idiot like in 2/3 of most projects, but even have some advantage among crowd in both heads.
