Do you prefer a contemporary setting (like a school, a normal boy's life etc...) or fantasy (elfs, creatures with powers etc...) ?

3dcg works better in modern setting due to being limited by available models.
In a game with 2d art a fantasy/scifi setting is better, you're less limited. You have easier time featuring crazy things that would seem implausible in a modern setting. Since it's drawn you're free to do whatever so why not go for a setting thats less boring and allows more creativity.

Honestly, I'm a little tired of both since they're the most used settings. But if I have to make a choice, I do prefer fantasy.

I agree with Elsa-owo.
I am also a bit tired of the whole known universe. Both fantasy (the popular fantasy setting that is) and slice of life have been done so many time.
That's why I created my own universe with my own rules. Just more fun like that.

But contemporary has more immersion, because you can create everyone’s life experiences like school, having a crush with a girl etc...

True, but it all depends on what your goal is with the game.
You can still create a wicked universe with weird rules yet keep it somewhat grounded and setting at present day.

Look at harry potter. Own universe, yet it's in present-day with school life, crushes, etc. still happening as it would in a slice of life. Just with a bit of magic and death added.

You're talking about relatability. You don't get immersed if it's not engaging or interesting. And what if people dont want to be reminded of their own school experiences, god knows how many people look back to their high school days in disgust. Or it can be so mundane people go "I've seen enough of this, I don't need more".

That’s a good answer, still most popular games (summer saga, milfy city...) use contemporary settings

The big brother and its clones are limited by the daz3d model availability I mentioned. You dont really know what kinda games would be popular if all the possible settings had same amount of premade assets. Now most 3dcg games are modern setting = most popular games are also going to be it.
Summertime saga is another clone except in 2d. The genre has certain tropes people except and which work in modern setting.

Now it could be that if you were to attempt to make a BB clone and not have it take place in modern setting it might do poorly.

School shit has been done to death.

You can make your own rules with fantasy/sci fi and the stories are usually better.

On top of that you usually find far less obnoxious, annoying as fuck MC's in fantasy games.

I have started avoiding X year old guy moves back home after years away and his dad dying to live with his mother/landlady and his 2 sisters/roommates.

That is boring as fuck and lazy writing. I'll take a fantasy or sci fi setting over another shitty college teen drama any day.

There's a strong trend towards FUTA lately which i think is going ot be the next 'thing' and become death ridden.
After RTP is finished i plan to go bigger a universe...

I wouldn't mind a contemporary setting with fantasy(think urban fantasy) or scifi(think cyberpunk or black mirror) elements. Household androids, for example, would freshen up a humdrum suburban setting.

If I had to specify closely, I'd chose Steampunk or Cyberpunk over high fantasy as far as porn games go, but I still prefer a high fantasy or any kind of fantasy setting to a contemporary one any day. I never even downloaded a game with a school setting but I'm not fond of other contemporary settings either, especially not, if they are too close to real life.

I agree with others, the incest and contemporary school thing has been beaten to death at this point. Do something else if you're intent is broad appeal in the contemporary setting. Most of my favorite recent projects are sci-fi or a blend of fantasy and contemporary.

But a great setting (and the best renders in the world) won't matter if the plot, characters, and dialogue is garbage and/or cookie-cutter.

(I voted fantasy as I'm assuming that sci-fi is included under that umbrella.)

no point to ask what people prefer that is the end of the world question
they want this they want that
what they don't like is shit what they like is great
but they never help you do it
and they are even not one of the people that will support your work

any work of art
there always more room of someone like it
and they not even show themselves in public on the post here and there
they just go to your patreon and pledge no matter what the critic says
if they like your unique work or your mass boring same old generic work
they will support you with no question

the silencer and the talker
you need to hear them in equal
even if the silencer never show up in front of you

So the real question is what you really want to do and into
that you can make it better with your full power and creativity
Fantasy or contemporary if the plot is not good. The work is not good.
it turning out to be the same

believe in your self believe in your choice
strike it with your will
do it with all of your research and polished it out
if that still can't touch the other heart
maybe you are in the wrong market
or maybe you are not trying it enough

As others said before, school settings and other are a cliche that has been done a loooooot of times, but the thing about cliches is: if it's well done, it doesn't matter how many times you saw/played the same thing because it will always be good, and that's why cliches are a thing, because they work.

I would choose contemporary over fantasy every day of the week. I can play fantasy games but the story has to be interesting enough or fun enough to catch me and while looking at the games I have I realized that I only have 3 "fantasy" games, in 2 of them I cheated to see the content because it wasn't worth it and the other game is a parody game so I'm not playing it because of the fantasy setting

Sometimes the fantasy setting or setup doesn't really enthrall me--it can be just as cliched as "teenaged boy lives in suburbs in a house full of women". And I think when devs do go to the well for an overdone setting like school or the family home, for the best of them it can free up time for them to work on creating the most appealing models possible and doing some quality animations. There are always tradeoffs.
