Female jealousy

Once I encountered the game Intimate Relations and was pleasantly surprised by the atypical behavior of one of the main heroines. Long story short, you play role as the girl's father and can engage romance relationship with her. But after this starts, she will not accept any rivals who would like to start dating you. She also even want you to break up with you wife! :D Yeah it's sounds a bit extremal, but she not only trying to get rid of her competitors, but also really caring about you. Since protagonist sometimes act a blockhead, she really help him out in difficult situations. Sadly, this is the only thing that I liked in this game, overall it's kinda bad, animations are ugly, and the game take extremely long pacing, even for me, who like slow burn.

So, what's my point? I really tired of typical female characters those who happy to share the MC with each other and those have no sense of rivalry, jealousy just an unfamiliar feeling for them. In addition, I rarely see really strong female characters, strong willed, the kind that can solve problems on their own. IMO , the fact that a girl doesn't want to share a guy with someone else looks much more interesting, realistic, and also hotter than what we usually see in these games.

In Japanese, there is character type, called -yandere, which is a psychopath who eliminates her competitors with brutal physical violence :devilish:. While I wouldn't mind playing such a game (It can be fun, why not?), it would still be enough for me if there were games with characters who could eliminate rivals through cunning, blackmail, and other methods.

Why it should be interesting? Well, those who like submissive girls, and who likes to build harems with them - it won't be, because they are satisfied with everything, what these games can offer. For others, as I mentioned above, it would be unique experience, breath of the fresh air. You as the player, will have the opportunity to choose girl you want to date and among them there will be that person I was talking about. It would be you choice if you want to start dating with her, and at first you wouldn't know what she up to, because we don't want to spoil the intrigue, her personality will be revealed later. And after she start to act, you will have 2 choices, try to continue maintain relationships with other girls, resolving difficult situations along the way, in which our jealous person was involved and try to break up with her. In first option you can even fail task and you won't be able to date this girls anymore, so it add challenge to gameplay. And second option, you can forget about others and enjoy her alone. It is important to note that her jealousy should not be groundless, only the actions of the character can provoke her. No one likes to have their brain fucked over nothing.

And lastly, I personally not fan of building harem of millions girls in them, I prefer to date few of them, until I decide who is my favorite and concentrate my attention only on her. In some games, where I will like the character very much I could even delete game after finish her route, because why I need others? She is the best ha-ha.

I really tired of the endless influx of the typical harem games, where all the female characters are happy to share the MC with each other and they have no sense of rivalry, jealousy just an unfamiliar feeling for them.
Cool story bro...
Don't play them then...

Dude all you have to do is:
>enter 'male protagonist' tag in the tag filter
>check tags of the games
>skip the games with the 'harem' tag
>???
>profit

I do that with NTR tag and you don't see me creating threads about how NTR games suck yet lmao

Ok, I think I need to clarify this, since people get the wrong idea about this thread. I expressed my opinion about harem games, but the thread purpose not about them. What I was talking about is a certain type of character, that I almost doesn't seen much in any game genre be it harem, kinetic novel, ntr etc. So the general idea is how people would feel about this kind of character. I even said how this character could fit in harem genre, it's not question about what games I should play or shouldn't.

I always look carefully at the game description, ratings and screenshots while choosing game to play and it just happens that most game just the same, they simply lacks of creativity. It not only plague the harem genre, but since this genre is the most popular there, most games are about it. I don't saying they all bad, there is some good harem games, but the amount is small. You probably didn't follow the link of game I mentioned in the first paragraph, but this game, in which I met this type of character had the harem tag. Even my avatar came from the game where protagonist basically claim all cute girls in the world as his own. But in this games not only all girls are different, most of them even hate protagonist, and one of them, as I remembered only now, exact this type of girl that I was talking in this post. She is the ruler of the kingdom, who wishes protagonist only for herself, despite that, she allowed him to sleep with others, after big amount of time and just because she doesn't want to lose him. I'm also not thinking that this genre is bad, I'm only saying that games(!), which contain this genre are often poorly made.

Well, I edited my first post, so hopefully the main topic will not slip away now.

Hi,
writing a good story with consistency and continuity takes time and dedication.
creating good characters in such a story takes even more time and more dedication.

(and not every porn writer is either Tolkien or Tolstoï)

a lot of people making games are just doing it following the trend of the moment to make a quick cash grab.
Harem is the Hot Topic of the moment.
you should not take it personally.

there are still a few good games - just take the time before choosing. ;)

I definitely see where you're coming from because I like the same thing. I really like yanderes, girls who are madly in love with the MC, especially in a harem, because they aren't afraid to push the envelope and get all the characters in awkward situations. There's a certain quality to assertiveness that I find extremely attractive which probably stems from the fact that I like feminine girls who have a few masculine traits. If you juxtaposition an assertive, yandere-like girl to what most people consider feminine, a frail girl who simply lets you do what you what to her, I find the yandere to be much more interesting. I like the fact that because they are wholly devoted to the MC, they can be, and are usually, very unpredictable in their pursuit of the MC's attention. This let's the author create some very interesting and fresh scenes because normal rules don't apply to them. On the subject of jealousy, I feel like the yandere's presence forces all the other potential love interests of the MC to ramp up their affection or risk losing out. That introverted love interest that has been holding in her feelings for the MC for her entire life? She now has to come out of her shell and make a move or else she risks losing the MC to the yandere. She also sets the bar and paves the way for what is romantically acceptable to do to the MC for all the other girls as well. Being the yandere of the group usually means she's the most assertive (at least when it comes to love) and willing to do things no other girls will try. When they see that she can get away with it, they realize it should be no different for them and they start doing it as well. All of this is great in the context of a slow burn harem with a yandere character present and I think yanderes should be a staple in every harem.

I think harem-writers avoid it because it lengthens the story significantly. Now you have to write and program the same scenario multiple times because of the jealousy component. And if it is a Ren'Py Visual Novel, you need to give the player a lot of save files to experience (or savescum) all of the jealous scenarios.
But it does make the character dynamics more interesting.

I partly agree. But lets be honest here: any complicated story with choices and consequences requires major efforts, if it not railroad story. The question is, if it planned to be the main theme of the game, because depending on the answer, there will be different difficulty of implementing such feature. If this will be the main theme of the story, then the main character may dating this person from the beginning and along the story, he will meet other girls, which will cause the main conflict of the plot. The MC's girlfriend will try her best to show how much she loves the main hero, and will try to get rid of the competition, and the main character can either succumb to the influence of lust, or stay loyal to his girlfriend. Here, I think, multiple protagonist fit very well. It will show the conflict from both sides and show what's going on in the girl's head. But if this character will be optional, the authors can simplify their task, and make some key points in the story that slice it in 2 routes, so they wouldn't need to make 100 different outcomes (and the dev don't go insane). For example in one route he can continue to date other girls, and jealous person will start doing nasty things until another key point, where character can stop it and break up with her. Or he can suppress her personality, continue to do his thing (building harem) and only listen to her whining, without any further actions on her part. Personally, I would prefer more grim story, so the MC will not go away too easy, and his action will have heavy consequences.

I guess the two visual novels that are perfect for this and that are completely in english (one was recently completed) are school days and White album 2. I personally recommend White albums 2 (do not download the version from this page as the translation is not updated , look in vndb for the translation page and then the game aside) if you want a love triangle with a lot of jealousy and taken more realistically and seriously. If you want something more unreal but just as fun then go for school days lol. Sorry for my english
