Yes, that's correct.
The ambush happens when you LEAVE the hallway at night.
I just tested it on v1.17 on a random old save file and it worked.

That's what the reputation system is for. If you want worse treatment then all you need to do is lower your reputation. The lower it goes the worse it gets. Eventually they will treat you as though you're a D rank citizen by default.
