That happens very often with project that just lasted too long than they should be. Changing hands, or just the dev hv a change of heart (be corrupted).
To be clear, If it's really just a money "Problem", there are legit ways to bring in money without resort in shady practice such as swindle, nickel and dime, etc.
But look closely, All their current moves are scammy and anti-consumer. (It's extremely similar to what Bane does to Blackgate, like what other said)
Chances are the Dev who's currently on the team don't care about making a good game anymore, they just want to Squeeze what profit there is left to squeeze, until it's completely dry.

Woah, seems some hate on FS here.
I am honestly glad they're still working on the game at all, I thought it died ages ago, but they're still adding stuff, even if they have to use Public / Backer to survive idm tbh.
If the game keeps getting updates that's great, admittedly not all updates would be great, but some are decent.
Compared to ages ago, the scenes have definitely expanded.
The amount of people contributing to the game is pretty low these days, despite what they might of otherwise said.

If you guys do a simple ctrl + f, you'd see they release the backer stuff to public on the following update.
The 'backer' stuff is everything done in this 1 update.

Some of the biggest dick suckers in Western game dev are not who you should be following after.
But sure, ignore any and all criticism, legit or otherwise, and assume people don't have real complaints, it's not like there are pages and pages of people talking about the problems they have.

I heard at some point that there was an effort to make a version of this game on godot. Did that stop? Is it ongoing? Held up by some other bits and pieces?

I haven't seen any movement on the Godot port in over 2 years. I'm guessing it isn't happening.

Dead, They even removed the Godot port from their goalpost (Or anything that's about improve the quality of the game, for that matter).
And since they shifted focus to milk money, now it's all about monthly subscription and commission. There's nothing "Long-term" anymore.

Darius has had maybe one update in a whole year. I keep an eye out for other content, but nothing is really that interesting.
