The difference is full access. This game - with an emphasis on the plot and narration, divided into acts (days). In the free version, only the first day is available (this is 6 hours of gameplay), in the full version there is also a second day and an almost finished day 3.

Regarding the discord aspect, Dev is not really fond of us pirates, slight sign of a non paying member mentioning things that happen past day 1 in discord and she will ban you. There are sections in discord paying members have access to, not much is going on there other than discussing day 2 and 3. And the possibility of Dev considering your suggestions.
