RPGM For AI devs, how do you make sprites?

So, i got RPGMZ and want to make a game with unique sprites as the present sprites and the sprites you can create using the character generator just don't do it for me, and because I am flat broke living paycheck to paycheck so I can't hire someone. I've tried making some, but I've run into problem such as the 4 direction sprite sheet being the wrong size or not spaced enough causing clipping, or transparency issues. I've played a few games on here that were made with AI and seen good sprites, so I'm curious how you guys do it?

Thanks.

edit: i hav stable diffusion web and comfyui, both local

1. Use character generators and/or buy them, there's more than one. You can also edit them slightly, which is faster than making them from scratch. There are so many that I'd be surprised if you didn't like any of them.

2. Create a grid (ex. 24 x 48) and when drawing sprites, make sure that they align with each other. 1 px to the right or left, and it'll look like they're shaking while walking. Once you're done drawing and taking measurements, disable the grid and you're good to go.

3. Use a template (ex: ) which is essentially the naked body where you can draw over (clothes, hair, new eyes, etc.) there are also free templates if you look around, ex:

Can you give an example of a RPGM game that you think used AI for the sprites? I was not aware of any, in fact quite the opposite, there have been several threads by wannabe devs who have had no luck trying to use AI for sprites

If I guessing correctly, your display issues may come from incorrect naming of your sprite sheets.
A standard sprite sheet consists of:
4×4 character “poses” (48×48) arranged as 2 rows and 4 columns.
So overall, the sprite sheet should contain 8×16 “squares” of 48×48 px character sprites.

If you’re preparing only one character, you should put the symbols ! and $ before the name. Unfortunately, I don’t remember whether it’s both of them or in what order.

In your graphics program, it’s best to enable a 48×48 grid and draw or obtain the first pose, then copy the entire square of the first pose perfectly into the next cells. On a new layer, introduce modifications, but keep the original underneath so the position stays exactly the same.

The same applies when assembling a sprite sheet from other sources—it’s best to enable the grid as well.

As for AI generation, you might get something usable, but almost certainly not in the sizes you need. I tried generating a few icons myself—the final result was, for example, 288×288 px instead of 48×48, and I had to manually redraw the image into the required format. At least the proportions were preserved, which helped. Still, if you don’t know pixel art, AI can be a useful aid, but in my experience you’ll end up drawing it yourself anyway.

sophie_22.png SophieCute_0026_Frame-9.png Foxy Sprite.png frame_34.png If you are not against AI.. well, of course you need to modify and edit etc .. but you can create them with Stable Diffusion, Chibi style loras, heavy emphasis on Chibi .. resize them to what you need. The workflow is very possible.. you can animate them as well, set them to 8 or 10 fps.. have photoshop or something separate it to a series of png files ..
I mean, it requires some learning.. but I'm creating some sprite spinoff versions of my main game. (A tower defense game and a brothel manager) .. with animated sprites in Godot. It s some effort, but as long as your computer can handle the s table diffusion and comfyUi workflow.. and you dont mind some manual work, you can get some real cute looking sprites :)

You will find a nice tutorial here, and since you have plenty of free nano banana pro generations in google ai studio, you can try it :

Not exactly the best illustration of the capabilities of the "vibe coding AI game generator" - the example game is utterly broken.

However the point about using Gemini credits to get access to Nano Banana is a good one - that model is amazing.

I just gave this link for the Idea and style of prompt to use, it's a good start and an easy way to do it
