I would recommend Life With a Slave Teaching Feeling, fairly linear visual novel but it very much involves emotional baggage.

I'll go ahead and recommend The Fruit of Grisaia. It's got emotional baggage out the rear end. You don't have the option to take advantage of the girls, and the MC himself isn't exactly a normal, happy-go-lucky guy. But I had a great time playing it, really tugs on the heartstrings - when it doesn't have you laughing your ass off.
