Seeking Good games with so-so review ratings?

Like most people, I search for games in the "latest updates" tab, sorted by weighted review rating. I've tried out most of the 4 star + games that appealed to me, having played probably 100~ or so games over time. But review rating isn't always a great guide. Some highly reviewed games I quickly uninstalled due to the author's having poor English ability, boring writing/dialogue, or characters who all sound like the same person, despite having good visuals and scenes.

I recently tried out "Another Chance" and found it to be an extremely well-written game, with each character having their own personality and style, as well as great hand-drawn art and sex scenes. However, it seems to have gotten quite a few bad reviews due to it's UI, confusing inventory systems and quest structure. Which is understandable, especially for people who never played old-school Sierra style adventure games. For me though, I don't mind it and all and felt like I'd found a real hidden gem.

I also played "Waifu Academy" - which despite it's cringe name, and early-on, really bad/cringe dialogue, later turned into a genuinely interesting, story-driven game with excellent characters and scenes. It remained silly, but in a good way. It takes a long time to get to that point, but it's worth a go if you have the time and patience to get there.

It got me wondering if there are any other games like these - great writing, characters, art and scenes but bad a bad initial release, or has very particular technical issues that keep it out of the spotlight? Or it could be that the game simply contains content that some people may find disturbing, but is avoidable?

https://f95zone.to/threads/star-knightess-aura-v1-1-1-aura-dev.76764/ One of the best corruption RPGMs, but sub-4 rating because the H comes very slow and there's a lot of focus on gameplay, dialogue and initially nonsexual corruption.

https://f95zone.to/threads/news-desk-v1-04-pyorgara.22148/ Good writing (focused on maledom) and characters, but has gameplay that is grindy and not well-balanced after a while. The dev's other games have similar issues, but this is my favorite.

https://f95zone.to/threads/lust-and-power-v0-74-regular-lurking-hedgehog.3882/ Much lower-rated than it would be if dev hadn't relaunched the game twice. But it also has a bit of grind and repetitive combat.

You could give Rebirth a try... think it sits around a 3.9 rating. It's a slow burner without a lot of sexual content, but the writing is good and the world/setting is very well made and moody.

One of my favorite in development games is Tribulations of A Mage. Great fantasy story with lots of romantic interest to pursue. The actual sex scenes are probably the weakest link due to how they are semi-animated with not a lot of writing to carry them through. Everything else about the game, however, is solid.

Haremon - most of its bad ratings seem to stem from the fact that this is a game, not a VN. Can't say I've had much difficulty with the game mechanics like most of the <3* reviewers, at least after putting a little bit of thought into the builds.
