It is hard to have hope anymore in this industry, considering how utterly flooded the market is with pre-alphas and other barebone prototypes that never go anywhere. This one, however, feels like it might buck the trend.
Made on Godot, which is an engine that has gained quite a bit of traction lately, Hard Stuck is a throwback to the original Rogue in ways that are not often seen in other modern roguelikes. While it’s nowhere near as complex as, say, Nethack or DCSS, the gameplay loop is still more or less the same; traverse a procedurally-generated dungeon floor by floor, picking up unidentified goods and gear along the way as you race against the ever-present clock that is your hunger meter. The h-content meshes with how rings work in this game, as their effects won’t trigger until you let a monster have their way with you. Unfortunately, while the h-animations are nicely done, they are very short, cannot be looped, and there’s no gallery available at the moment to view them at your leisure. I’m sure these issues will be rectified if the game continues being worked on.
EDIT: As of version 0.2, animations can now freely be looped, and a gallery is available at the start. Praise the lord!
The demo is free, and it provides enough of a vertical slice to show that the dev, whoever it may be, seems to know what they’re doing. It might just be stellar one day, but for now I think it's reasonable to be cautiously optimistic about its future.
