I'm actually surprised not to see this discussed pretty heavily. Maybe I'm the idiot who doesn't know how this all works :poop:

How can we run all Ren'Py games in HDR? I know that one workaround is to run windowed with it maximized, but the second I turn on full screen in any VN, HDR is disabled. I much prefer to use HDR on my LG C1 when playing (or if I happen to be on my other PC that uses an HDR capable BenQ display).

For devs/geniuses: how can these games be played full screen with HDR enabled? For reference, I'm using a RTX 3070 TI as my GPU. OS is Win11.

I’m posting this to ask the same question. Recently, I bought a monitor with HDR, and my renders looked weird until I realized this: when I go full screen in Ren'Py, HDR turns off. Does anyone have any idea why?

i have given up myself. now, if a renpy game starts in full screen, i just change it to run in a full screen window and reenable hdr, works pretty well until the next time. tab-switching always turns off or changes hdr settings for some reason. not sure if this happens on any other full screen games or this phenomenon is renpy only. running on a 3050 myself.

My problem is as a developer. Now I don’t know whether to make the renders with SDR or HDR in mind. Given this issue and the fact that I’ve already edited over 500 renders in SDR, I’m going to stick with that, even though those using HDR will see the game looking much less impressive. Here’s an example:

If you look at this render without HDR, it has more contrasted and vibrant colors, but with HDR, it looks paler and dull because I edited it in SDR.

What should I do? Finding a balance is difficult and a headache, so I think I'll opt to do it in SDR because if I edit it in HDR, then the SDR looks much worse than the other way around. Shieeet...

having desktop hdr and automatic hdr enabled , i think the image looks pretty good. would have to see the same image edited in both hdr and sdr, side by side to compare the two :)

On my Deviant Art, I made a gif yesterday with an alternate route of the same scene:

I did this one the other way around: edited in HDR. So if you're using HDR, it will look more vibrant. But if you disconnect it and view it in SDR, it looks extremely saturated.

As I said, I think it's better to edit in SDR and let HDR look less impactful, because the reverse looks much worse.
