I get to the point where the spinning "Now Loading" screen finishes, but then it blacks out the screen. No sound, no visuals, nothing. Granted, it doesn't freeze or crash, but it doesn't really work. Oh, and the options don't work either, so... I guess that's something?

Ah. When you extracted the game did it say "file path too long" for one of the files.
Use 7zip to extract it not the normal windows extract tool. I had this issue too but I've seen it happen on a previous game I played and the 7zip method worked and fixed it for me.
