Although Bethesda can create such companions herself with Serana, she is a great follower with good dialogues giving the player the feeling of a well written credible character in the game. But mostly the followers are very one dimensional. Lydia is the best example. Always stands in the way and when you see enemies, you can forget about a sneak attack with her, because she runs around like the elephant in a porcelain shop and attacks everyone immediately.
