How are we feeling about AI art?

I do have a BTEC in Art but drawing people is my weakest aspect. I would pay someone but I want to make this game as a passion project after going through a ton of generic slop.

I'm tired of colleges (some exceptions), I'm tired of harem MCs where they are the only man in the world capable of getting pussy, otherwise its an ugly bastard committing sex crimes.

I love diversity in what's happening and I like other characters to be as alive as the MC and that's why Pale Carnations and Our Red String are the best games on here imo. But here's the thing. I'm going to make my own game but I just can't think of what to do.

Should I create AI art and bring it to photoshop? Pencil sketch? Outright use AI art? What's the move guys? Any other tips too?

If you are thinking about using AI for art in a game, good luck with that.

If you haven't read through any threads here, you might not realize that Ai art is not well loved around here. People come in and declare their hate for it because it is stolen art or that it isn't really art and detracts from the people who made actual art that was used to train said AI.

Personally, I like AI art, but I know it has its limitations. Consistency is one of them and getting things like fingers, toes, and limbs correct can be a challenge for AI art, as well as consistently drawing a character the same every time.

A game that isn't a harem game would be a nice change, for myself. The only thing I would watch out for would be the NTR crowd. If you are selling NPCs as love interests ... but they are swingers, you might get some pushback from folks about it. If you establish characters as fuck buddies, folks might not be as upset about 'sharing' their girl.

Personally I like AI art. I muck around in stable diffusion at times and enjoy creating images, well, when it goes right...sometimes it can be a pain, especially the eyes. That being said, there is an AVN on here (Farmers Dreams?) that went down the AI art route and the renders do actually look the worse for it. One character, Nova I think? looks worse with the new renders. So, yeah I can get why some people on here are not fans. I think AI in the future is actually exciting where it might go though, unless it's Skynet...

I've also recently started to appreciate some AI music too, which can be fairly decent. As a musician, I don't feel threatened by it like some do, because it can never replace live bands.

Ironic you would call harem games generic slop and then in the same post consider using AI. But hey, do whatever works for you

There's nothing wrong with using AI art as long as the art isn't the focus. If you have solid mechanics and an interesting story, people looking for that will look past the art despite a good number of vocal critics of the practice coming out of the woodwork to cry about it. If the art stands as a selling point of the game... good luck.
Though I will say that post-production editing of the AI's output is "the right way" to do it if you want an attractive game.

Instead of just writing the same thing over and over again:
Just like with anything dealing with personal tastes:
  • There are people who hate it.
  • There are people who do not like it.
  • There are people who do not care.
  • There are people who prefer it.
  • There are people who love it.
And, typically, people who hate things are most likely to be the most vocal about what they hate. Thus why businesses have an ideal complaint to compliment ratio of 5:1, because they know that people who have a problem or dislike something are much more highly to be ones who make it known over those who like it.

Honestly, from what I have found is --- most people prefer hand-drawn 2D and 3D over AI... however, I have also found a lot of people who don't give a shit because they just want to cum and go on to the next game to cum and go...

What I have seen is that people want decent enough art with some consistency in the character models and continuity of style throughout.

I would recommend perusing the AI art threads in the forums: https://f95zone.to/forums/artwork.112/?prefix_id=111 (as well as any others you come across) and post some of your work for critique and suggestions, as well as a way to promote your game to people who obviously enjoy AI art.

FYI: In the last 365 days, 364 games have been added to this site that are tagged AI cg. That's of the 500+ total games on this site with the AI cg tag. So, as you can see, there is a growing trend of their usage. So, if you like to use AI cg and you plan to be attentive to details, cleaning up problems in photoshop and keeping consistency a key factor, then it's a good tool for you to use. There will be haters of anything you do - whether it be game engines (some people despise RPGM and will bitch about that... others Ren'Py... etc), the writing, genres (Harem vs. Netorare fans and haters), etc --- or if you handdraw 2D, use 3D (then you have the DAZ vs. Honey Select vs... etc fans and haters).

The key is to build the game YOU WANT TO PLAY, the way YOU WANT TO BUILD IT. There are over 7 million people registered on this site --- even if just 1% play your game - that's 70,000 players. And that's just from here. Now, don't expect even 1% of 1% to be subscribers for funding, however --- 2/3 of all adult game developers on Patreon only bring in $100 USD or less per month, even after 3+ years on that site, no matter what their art style, writing, game engine, genres, etc.

In theory, I think AI art is a fantastic tool for talented authors to produce games without the need to work with an artist. However, in practice, it just lets people quickly churn out garbage that we all have to sift through.

Disregarding the ethical side of the question, in my opinion it looks bland and once you've seen one drawing you've seen them all. There's no sauce
This post demonstrates the problem. We can all identify the bland anime style in an instant and realize something is AI generated, but nothing about the technology forces the images to look like that. It's a result of people being too lazy to actually learn how to use AI art and instead just type "big tiddy anime girl" into whatever online generator is popular at the moment. That's why it all looks the same. If someone were to take the time to learn how to use the technology effectively utilizing unique SD checkpoints, loras, or whatever the newest tech is, they can create images that don't have the "AI" look to them and are indistinguishable from hand drawn art.

As a professional designer I should be outraged at the very idea of using AI but to be honest if you can't afford to have a real artist and you can't draw it's a good replacement for small game projects as long as you do it the right way by modifying it in photoshop and putting some effort into making it consistent across scenes. I'm fine with people using AI generated images as long as they aren't big corporations capable of hiring artists and honestly I'd rather play a game with AI generated images than another crappy html game with porn screenshots or another game made with poorly made characters in Daz3D or Illugames (I have nothing against those programs, but most developers have zero sense of aesthetics and make ugly abominations with those programs).

I'd rather see your own drawing, and if you did it you'd also quickly get better at it. it even be exactly what you need.

I keep repeating this, but the fidelity of your art is far less important than a handful of commenters hating it will make it seem. go check some badly drawn games, they have just as much fans and even more (like summertime saga) than good art. good art is 'nice to have' but not critical, and I'm saying this as a classical painter.

but, if you decide to go the unrecommendable and almost universally hated AI route, your idea of fiixing it afterwards is kinda the wrong way. instead you FIRST draw (or use daz) your own posing, then use AI to 'style it up', and then fix the AI artifacts by hand. it's 3x the work to not using AI (which btw applies to all 'serious' AI use like AI programmers), but that's how you do it 'well'.

it will still look like generic slop, but at least all the girls won't be portraits looking at the camera anymore. the only somewhat usable way to use AI is to NOT create your art with it, but to change the style of it. it's window dressing, you can't make a shit game gold no matter how much you polish it with AI.

what comes to the issue of plagiarism, it's irrelevant in this space. outside of our pirate community it will kill most AI companies in near future the second legal system catches up, but here it's not an issue for the obvious reason of this being a pirate site.

I got nothing against AI as an artform let alone as a tool. I've seen a lot of great AI art lately. That being said, there are still a lot of obvious issues with AI, such as inconsistency between frames of images, and even more obvious are how it tends to hit the uncanny valley (extra/missing fingers, blending/fusion of body parts, clones of people in the background, etc.) We're not at the point yet where AI art can be a replacement of real art generated by actual artists, and to be honest I hope we never do. I see AI art as more of a placeholder to be used for your demo while you're waiting for a real artist. But if you want to use AI art for whatever reason then go ahead, just know that it's pretty obvious when AI art is being used. I suggest understanding its limitations and taking advantage of what it's actually good at and not doing something that ends up breaking immersion.

I have mixed feelings about AI art. Lets put aside quality and similarity of generated pics since its developer's job to make a decent art using AI. I feel like all games that uses AI as "main artist" some sort of scam scheme. Announce game with good renders then make some quick bucks on patreon or something then start new game under new name and repeat. The reason is pretty simple you us something like chatgpt to make code for game and AI art to get the most crucial parts of any game. So yeah AI=game = scam game= dead game.
On other hand ppl used honeyselect (game) to make some shity renpy games with renders from honeyselect but somehow they did a decent job and made some nice games. I think you can look at HS like some sort of game (art) engine. Not to mention the ~95% of renpy games used the same assests over and over for a very long time. So using AI instead of 15~years old renders is also a solid option.
For people to accpet AI art someone need to make super good product using Ai only and then it will slowly become a norm well at least i think so.
