And what exactly do you like to read in a VN: deep lore, character story, jokes, lewd dialogues, something else?

If it's written well, I could read forever. The problem comes with Japanese VN, I can't stand them and I don't know why since I love other japanese games.

I would initially look at the images. If they are not interesting, immediately skip the game. When I am interested, I would look at the story told by the images, if that is interesting, I would look at the text, if the topic interests me, the plot is good and the writing is good, I could read a lot else, I would skip the text and only enjoy the images.

For general Visual Novels, I first looked at the genre before considering reading it cause reading is an investment. If I read half way through and didn't like it, either I dropped it or continue reading it due to having already invest the time. But if it is a VN which hits the right spots, I could read it for hours till I finished the whole VN. Some VN I read through the night and even reread it all over again cause it is too interesting.

There are good story Visual Novels, but I have a mental block for Adult game storytelling where I don't find it worthwhile seeing the whole dialogue unless it gives me interesting stuff or some choices, if not I'll press that ctrl button until a scene pops up.

I do enjoy a good story, but to put it plainly, most NSFW devs do not have the skill to pull off a good story, either artistically or technically. I do not want to read a work riddled with typos or an eye-straining lack of punctuation. I also don't want to listen to characters ramble about nonsense that doesn't build their character or contribute to a plot. So in general I think most devs ought to focus on game mechanics over trying to write long dialogues.

Show, don't tell. Good facial expressions and subtle pose changes can convey a lot more than a slide of words. Moreover, giving the player some tricky dialogue choices can build tension much more efficiently than exposition.

I could read forever but 99.9% of adult VN writing fuckin sucks.

Even a lot of the good ones on here are just "good for a porn vn" but pale in comparison to an actually good VN. The porn genre kind of always creates awkward scenarios to get to the sex.

There are exceptions of course, but those are pretty rare. I tend to read the first few mins and see how it goes.

Yeah, it really does depend on how well it's written. If you get the rare gem that has decent writing - enough to pull me in, at least - then I'm with it and will be happy to read for as long as it can hold my interest. If it starts to ramble on or activates the part of my brain that wants to try and fix sloppy mistakes, weird phrasing, bad jokes that drag on too long, inane dialogue &c then I'll probably start to skim.

if the plot is interesting and entertaining, I can read until I pass out from exhaustion, baby. some games have a story so engaging that I completely ignore the sexual content of the game and fast forward past the sex scenes.

Depends, I often skip if I'm not interested in the Character at all. Most Games have way too many characters. I wish Games would focus on 2-3 LIs instead of 5+.

With real exceptions, if I'm not playing The Walking Dead, I don't read more than two passages, man. But ironically, in the game that I'm working on right now, there's about six passages that you can't get through that tell you the main story.
