It's not a competition, there's nobody out there waiting to make you fail, peoples that think it's a sort of race have issues, they are insecure and try to put the blame on others for their own short comings. there's no rush, no expectation, no one is waiting to ambush you, in fact: if you put your mind to it, no one CAN stop you, trust yourself and keep working.
If you have a creative mind you will stand out, if you want to create something do it, there's nothing and no one stopping you, be persistent. Fall down seven times, stand up eight.
It's not luck that make you write interesting stories and compelling characters, it's not luck if you create an attractive world.
luck is like saying "god" or "magic" or "destiny" it's just something people's brain don't understand so they put a name on it, but the reality is that there's a reason to everything, if you achieve anything in life: it's not about luck, it's about dedication and consistency, your success and failures are your own.
once you have the right mindset, then you start from the ground up, scenario, characters, make a storyboard, define how they interact with each others, some like soccer, others like basketball...
when you have a clear definition of "who what where when and why" then you choose an engine, and that depend on how comfortable you are with coding, what kind of experience you want to share, how best your world will be represented, there are several options and peoples ready to help you.
finally the visuals, define a style and stick to it, it doesn't have to be good, but it must serve it's purpose: to illustrate what's going on, and if visual are coherent and consistent it will be appealing; look games like AOLTA by Hornblase, the art is not great, but it's consistent and the final product "make sense".
You're not a victim, don't look for excuses, it's all up to you.
