In incest games with sister characters

Just curious, using Man of the House as an example do people prefer more of a sister character who starts off antagonistic like Veronica and you slowly build up to a consensual relationship? Or more like Ashley who wants to jump the MC from the get go?

I prefer the lovely sister, like Ashley from Man of the House or Sara in Milfy City. I'm really not a fan of girls like Veronica and Tracy.

They can have more than just two personalities, of course. No reason why the younger sister can't be a brat, or the older sister be cool and supportive.

I think that most games do the sister poorly. Some tropes I've seen:

  1. Angry/Antagonistic sister. Usually overcome by blackmailing her, after which she'll love you long time as long as you supply the dick, and seemingly forgets the fact you were blackmailing her.
  2. Innocent/Idiot sister. Cute girl that can't get a guy (wut), and falls for her pervert brother's fawning attention.
  3. Depressed/In Trouble Sister. Bombshell that just broke up with her ex, her ex is a criminal, or otherwise. Just wants a cuddle, a hug, or some protection. Is willing to put out for anyone who makes her feel better. Also can be poor and needs to make a few bucks - her brother steps in with his business acumen, rescues her business, and she decides putting out is a good repayment.
  4. Brocon sister. Someone missed the train entirely on sex ed, historical or social taboos for incest, and just wants the closest dick to her, closest to her age. Is likely to rape the MC in his sleep - MC like the MC rapes all the other family members in their sleep.
  5. One time mistake sister - in a drunken/drugged stupor she has sex with the MC, and suddenly she's all game for further incest encounters. Regret almost never seems to happen in VNs, and this girl doesn't believe in mistakes.
  6. Brother has magic powers/drugs that she's got no chance against. Really she's the maiden in distress, and the MC is the villain.

Some games I've seen do sisters ok :
  1. Loser - Older Sister Gina. She's open sexually, but incest isn't her thing. She's flirty, perverted, but not into her brother. A little bit of alcohol might loosen her up a bit, but the most you are going to get is some slightly out of line discussion, unless you are willing to be a complete pervert to her. Eventually she'll find flirting with you more and more exciting, and crosses that line ever so slowly. Even though she's probably been in a relationship before - she's brand fucking new to an incestuous one, and tip toes that line carefully. Breakthroughs are made in extreme situations, but then things go back to the status quo.

Some things I think people could do to make more 'lifelike' female characters.
  1. First, don't bother giving us 'her thoughts'. "Oh boy, I am really falling for my step-bro, this is so wrong, but so hot." I think is a drastic oversimplification as to what might go through a woman's mind as she's considering incestual relations with her brother. It might give you, the author a valid reason why the sister is willing to cross the line, but I don't buy it. I'd rather try to figure out her rationale.
  2. Have her reject 'christian/western morality' across the board. Lots of animals have sex with their siblings, and while humans have much stronger familial bonds than a lot of other animals, even chimps have incestual relations. She's not interested in it at the start (or maybe she's just curious), but as she finds that no one is getting hurt by innocent flirting, she's ok with it. But its not a brick wall that she refuses to cross at first, but is later completely forgotten and discarded once she's on the dick a few times.
  3. Instead let her adopt a system of morality that is much more personal. One that might involve not hurting others as its core, and all other actions are ok. Show this by having her cheat on tests, but not cheat on others. Respect her parents, but go behind their backs when she knows she won't get caught. Treat the MC (her brother) with respect, but steal a few dollars here and there. She changes in the open when its expedient, but closes the door otherwise. Bonus points by making her late a lot - she's in a fucking hurry, and you get plenty of opportunities to show her half dressed and ogled by her brother.
  4. Let her catch her brother checking her out in innocent settings. Late for work, changing with the door open. Her blouse not completely covering her bra. Thong sticking out the back. Shirt that is more transparent than she could tell in the dark. Bathroom door that doesn't close properly unless time is taken to close it firmly. Its a brief interaction that turns her on too, doesn't hurt anyone, and allows her to maybe start doing it more often - on purpose. She is essentially seducing the MC without knowing it, and everything really is her fault.
  5. Give her flaws that both push her into MC's arms, but also push him away. Someone with depression might very well want 'any' attention one minute, then completely reject it all later. If she's an alcoholic, make it again something that is both in the way of the MC, and helps him out a little. Maybe she's afraid of intimacy, and pushes all her boyfriends away, but for whatever reason doesn't see the MC as a potential boyfriend until its too late. Whatever these flaws are - establish them early.
  6. Let her establish rules that she herself breaks - let her test the bounds of the intimate relationship herself, kiss on the cheeks, a massage that goes too far - to signal she's slowly opening up. Rather than just the MC groping and getting away with it. Bonus points for making her regret it for at least a while until she can think about it better.
All this is not to say that people won't play a game where the sister is one of the tropes, or its just about getting to the sex as fast as possible - but if you want to attract people to your game because of the writing, making the sister character more than just a minor speedbump to sex is a large step forward - and also distinguishes your games from others.

One last thought - guys like being pursued too. Even in a game like Milfy City where the mom is openly permissive of the MC starting a relationship - she's still fairly passive. There's a lot of open space for active female heroines.

I don't mind it because it's a cliche, but I just seriously dislike the asshole big sisters for being assholes. I have no time for people like that IRL, and I definitely don't want to waste my time on asshole characters in fantasy. if you compare them to nice big sisters like caroline in milfy city, it's clear that's just far superior way to go.

the exception is if it's a femdom game. not my thing, but clearly that's the right context for an asshole female character.

another exeption is what movies and series always do when someone needs to die in a horrible way. first they're shown being complete assholes (even if they were 'good' before), and only THEN they get the horrible death. so if you wanna do something horribleto a character you make the audience hate it first, so they don't feel bad when it happens. that way people even cheer to the most horrible fates. like a slaver being burned alive.

but when a character is an asshole for no reason it just makes the audience hate her. good characters should always make the audience root for them, especially if they're evil.

Ultimately depends on the total characterization and the writing. I quit MotH before getting very far with Veronica. I never learned the justification for her antagonism (if there was one), so she just seemed like a simple cliched bitch.

In Sisterly Lust though, I much preferred Bella to Rachel. Her initial antagonism was revealed to have a reasonable justification. Granted it was mild and short lived in the romance path, but it also factored in to the relationship as it developed which added sexual tension and emotional connection.

Over the years I've noticed certain over used stereotypes used for many sister characters... And this over use to me is just pure laziness on a developers part, or perhaps they just like copy catting other peoples works, who knows...

Here are some examples:

1 - The sister that treats the protagonist badly and/or with contempt, and usually it's to a higher then normal degree...

A - Typically the only way this sister type is brought into submission is through Black Mail or paying her off in some way...

B - Sometimes the aggressive sister used to be close to the protagonist when younger until something caused the relationship to drift apart, causing her to be more abrasive as a defense mechanism, and eventually the protagonist gets through her shield of aggressiveness, and their relationship gets better, eventually leading to a sexual relationship...

2 - The sister who is an extreme introvert, virginal, usually completely naive to anything sex related, and sometimes a developer will even throw in a touch of constant sexual shame at doing anything erotic...

A - Typically this is the slow burn character that the protagonist uses manipulation and/or constant flattery with

3 - The sister who is very sexually active, and may even be the instigator of incest with the protagonist...

A - Typically she sexually teases the protagonist a lot, until he finally just goes for it and although maybe surprised the sister just goes along with it.

B - Sometimes the sister is perhaps a big extrovert, teasing the protagonist or not, maybe even is a bit pushy and needy, but becomes highly submissive once the protagonist gets his way with her...

4 - The sister who is much older, perhaps is divorced, and loves the protagonist but not sexually... Yet she has had bad relationships and has been single for a while (sometimes this is the mom character instead)...

A - She is usually either a Slow Burn character that the protagonist has to do favors for and constantly praise, or is more pushy and slightly aggressive and so the protagonist has to win her over through getting a job along with the favors and praise to pacify her...

B - Sometimes she is this emotionally bruised woman in need of tenderness and love, which it just so happens is the protagonists speciality... Typically starting with the overly used massage gimmick...

5 - Many times it's the two sister combo, with one being overly aggressive and the other being friendly and loving towards the protagonist...

A - Typically the aggressive sister is the older sister, and the nice sister is usually the younger sister...

B - Sometimes it can be a trio of sisters, one aggressive and stand offish, one introverted and naive, and one energetic and loving...

It's a real rarity to find the sister/s just all being normal human beings, with just some varying interests and natural differences... There is a real tendency to go to extremes with character personalities in general much of the time... Either it's due to in-experience regarding human psychology and/or personality, or perhaps lack of exposure to varying personalities outside of cheesy movies (and perhaps B-rated porn), or just laziness due to lack of creative talent... Maybe a hodge podge of all that...

It's not happening to the extremes that it was once upon a time, but those overused sister archetypes still rear up even today in new works... Incest or not...
