Is the amount of sex scenes important in the first release?

So far my game currently only has 2 planned sex scenes in the first episode. The reason for this is story-wise it doesn't make sense to have so many sex scenes in the first release because the mc and multiple heroines barely know each other. So I wanted to know that should I sacrifice my story and just put like 10 sex scenes in the first release or keep going and stick with 2 sex scenes even though some people might be mad at the little "content" there is. I'd like to know other people's perspectives, thanks.

I for one could do even with zero. Just give me attractive characters and interesting story, and I'll gladly wait for a while for more. But I suspect that I may be in the minority.

For a first release or first few updates I want a well established plot, characters and whatnot. I want to see a promising start that leaves me with high expectations. Cheap sex scenes just for the sake of it are just... cheap, and mostly kills down my enthusiasm and fucks up the build up if it's with relevant characters.

I don't think it's required but I do think it's nice to have 1 or 2 characters who are easy enough to jump into some sex scenes pretty early even if the most important characters won't yet. Could be a drunken one night stand. Could be the MC walking in on someone else having sex, or maybe sneaking into the girls locker room to watch the soccer team shower after practice, whatever. I think most adult games need to have some sort of naughty scenes even in the first couple of releases.

It isn't important.
It's far better imho to establish some characters and the basis of the plot. Of course having sex scenes is a bonus, but if said scenes don't make sense plot wise I'd rather see them when they make sense.
For me two scenes are plent if they fit the story.

As few sex scenes early as possible. A great way to know if a story is crap is if they have sex scenes in the first chapter.

No you're not, the most successful VNs have NO early sex scenes.

Opinions here will vary. Some will say "Sex game no need plot, characters, or gameplay. Sex game need sex!" These people are not wrong, and if the first opinion your game gives off that it's too light on the sex, then they'll be turned off to your game.

Myself, I'm looking for more than that in a game. Your sex game could have no sex in it at all, and that's not necessarily a deal breaker for me. I'm looking for all the things that makes a good game, good. Is the writing good? Does the game look good? Is the game in a genre that I'm interested in playing? Is there some innovative hook that no other game attempts, or maybe it's just aiming to do the established things right? If your game is good and/or appears to be heading in an intriguing direction where it will become good, then you have my attention. The thing is what makes a good game good is subjective. What I think makes a good game isn't necessarily what you think makes a good game.

I think though that the best games aren't made to try and please some nebulous idea of an audience. The best games are made to please the one making it. Make the game that you want to make because you want it to be a thing, and it will find an audience.

Could it be that people complaining about not enough sex in these games may be also less likely to read thread like this? :)

Know what I like as an alternative? Bonus sex scenes. Sometimes an update simply doesn't warrant a sex scene- especially the first release. In these cases I think it's fun to have a bonus scene included in the release which is just a hot sex scene completely outside the story's canon. This opens up all sorts of options without making anything feel forced.

Game needs to have good plot first. By plot I mean story. If you can't make me read the text and just auto skip to reach the next decision point, then no amount of tits, pussies and dicks would make me waste time on your game.

First impressions count. That doesnt mean the early version needs 50 sex scenes but a few would be good (they dont even have to be vaginal/anal penetration it could be blowjob/handjob etc)

You're probably not making the type of game I'm into, but regardless if it's v0.00000001 or 1.0, if I'm going to be interested in a game it should not take long in getting to the fetish angle that I'm interested in (e.g. trainer, NTR, mind-control etc.), and it should at least have a proof-of-concept of how you're going to be handling the sex content in the game - the dialogue, graphical style (if it's different from the normal gameplay), sound, etc.

Some of my favorite games I would have dropped early if they'd mucked around too long in getting to the meat of the game, but that doesn't mean having a bunch of sex scenes in the first release. It means at least setting up the core premise and gameplay mechanics which will lead to the sexual content (which again, is not relevant if you're making a VN, so no idea there).

Honestly, what you do in the first release ain't going to matter much. Most people don't play first releases and even less are willing to fork over cash to support them. A person playing your game for the first time when you're already on update 4 isn't going to notice that you had no sex scenes on your first release. Unless you have an extraordinary game you're releasing, there's almost no chance in hell you're breaking past $500 a month in subscriptions from your first release alone. All this to say, don't sweat your first release so much. Aim for consistency instead. And if you have some dream of making it big on your first release, lower your expectations or else you'll end up disappointing yourself.

The best alternative is to make the first release a good chunk of your game. Few people like playing what is essentially a demo or teaser.

As for sex-scenes, fully explored scenes with dozen of images aren't super necessary for a first release(as Mimir's Lab said, most people will probably skip it anyway) but you definitely want some titillation in there to whet the appetite. It is a porn game after all. It's also a good to get some sex in there, be it a dream, fantasy or throwaway character so people to get an idea if they are good or not and if it's worth sticking around.

Your first release need to be a good example of how the rest of your game is, it's potential, the writing style, the mechanics, the visuals. If you are making a sandbox game having 90% of your first-release be a linear intro will just put people off for example.

Tbh for me if you're going for a non story driven game then sex scenes matter. If the game foucses on story then there's no need. Take a game like Lessons Of love, think what you will about the story, but it doesn't have lots and lots of sex scenes as it's more story driven. Don't throw a sex scene in just for the hell of it, in general I'd prefer less well done and meaningful sex scenes than lots of poorly done meaningless sex scenes. To sum up, for a story driven VN it doesn't matter, sandbox then you want loads.

Either you're making a game, and sex doesn't matter much, or you're making a sex game, and sex is of the essence.

Personally, I wouldn't download a v0.1 sex game with no sex. I'd rather have sex that doesn't jive completely with the story than not enough sex content.

If your game is a nukige then obviously yes, the plotline won't exactly be all that important.
If your game is a text-based game, no, and it can go all the way through without a single one if done right.
If your game is a progressive porn game, it's your chance to bring back decent development ethics and release what you can when you can at regular intervals (real life shit happens, don't use deadlines you won't be able to meet even while being completely honest).

Promises to your audience to bring all in one go and making people wait forever is the financial domination kink abuse approach. At this point this won't even taint your reputation anymore as long as the audience has a fetish for it, which is kind of depressing to aspiring developers and former ones as they really want to keep the passion and motivation the essence of the project, not how many copies they'll sell/distribute nor how many brainwashed tipping fans they'll get.

Either way, you should just try to make your first release interesting but if you don't want to fail (by sticking to proper ethics but overworking) or become another one of the most infamous developers in porn game making history, keep it organized and under control.
