HTML Is there an advantage to doing real-porn games in HTML engines

It seems like the vast majority of games that use real-porn pix or video use HTML-based engines like Twine or QSP, and I was wondering whether the reason that happens is just because somebody started doing it that way (and then some of the people who played those games decided to make their own games, and just used the same engine), or if the HTML engines are actually better for doing stuff like embedded video clips than Ren'py or some other more mainstream engine.

can think of several reasons
for one, ren'py doesn't support mp4, h264, aac or gif, so requires more work to use existing real porn and convert it to supported formats.

twine is more like a text game engine while ren'py is a vn engine so on the whole they attract different type of gamedevs, not only counting adult space. this is why html games usually are more text focused than ren'py vns.

and then like you said, inspirations from earliers games and also what players of this genre has come to know and expect

I did some modding on a Twine game before, and my perception was that it also didn't support mp4. By which I mean I already had a lot of short porn clips in mp4 format, and it didn't work when I tried to put them in the game unless I converted them to webm.

That was a list of formats ren'py doesn't support, right? I was saying Twine doesn't support it.
oh haha, i'm the one who is blind lol. sorry

my brain probably made the mistake because twine has no issue with mp4 that i know of. do you play games IN twine though? people play html games in browsers, and what browser doesn't support mp4?

sounds more like the game you modded expected webm files to work

It might be because the clips are generally relatively small and the games even more text heavy then most Ren'Py based VN's. I feel there comes a point where Ren'Py becomes a little inefficient when displaying so much text without at least a little modding. And since Ren'py generally blows up images and videos it might become a pixelated mess if the original is only 240p or so. (and you don't want people to download 100GB of video files so you can make the game run at a decent resolution and framerate.

It is speculation though.

Also momentum helps a lot. E.g. all these other real porn games are HTML based so I will make mine HTML based as well.

I was playing it in browser. It is possible that the game's code had an artificial limitation on file types.

Yeah, this is one thing I was thinking about, that the HTML format makes it easier to just have a wall of text, and then sprinkle in one or more images where applicable. With Ren'py, a lot of text would probably mean pressing space bar a lot, and if you don't have any images to go with the specific scene, the rest of the screen will just have to be black. It does kinda feel like the HTML format lends itself more to, "okay, this part of the game will just be reading for a little bit," and maybe the people who play HTML games are more accepting of that.
