Is there any worth in learning Blender or is Daz used for pretty much anything?

For out and out accuracy I believe Arnold is still the benchmark... never used it myself though... I have better things to spend money on!

There are some really interesting comparison videos and articles where the big engines get compared on the same scenes... it tends to be on the fine detail stuff like accurate light diffraction that you start to notice the difference... for 99% of scenes you'd have to go out of your way to see the difference though.

Yeah just looking through texturingxyz showcase/tutorials shows most of them are renderd using Arnold. A couple Vray, and 1 cycles which I wasn't expecting.

Ah, I see where you're coming from.
I may be wrong but in practice more likely you gonna use Al shader (or FastSSS2) for a 'quick' setup (using Arnold or Vray), which shouldn't bring you that far away from what you can pull with Cycles or Iray with a bit a knowledge, in most common case. I think once engine can deliver most common 'skin' layers - it really doesn't matter that much if you know what you are doing. Best engine are the one you are more comfortable with imo.

Food for thoughts tho, Victoria 8.1 in Arnold by its creator Hyeseon Oh (very awful cheap Daz skin, not texturingxyz lmao, * strong sacarsm noise*) :

I would add to the gloriousness of Daz/Iray framework, as there is no 'nodeless' engine, this is what you are competing against, for each single surface :

While not perfect it's rather solid (in fact I think this is utterly brilliant).
Now you just have to beat it everytime to make your effort worthwhile.
Not just 1 time but for the ~1000/1500 renders that you will need for your VN.

Can't make anything out on that... which is a shame as it looks really interesting

I was just having a poke at it... and as with so many things with Daz using it feels like pulling teeth to do anything.

I think learning blender can teach you a lot abt working with 3D. Characters, environments and such. And the render engine is
awesome for a free application. Switching between DAZ and Blender is a big hassle for me bc Blender behaves so different from DAZ. Like, Blender acts differently if you use shortcuts or the sidebar buttons for applying loops or bevels. And the constant switching between edit and object mode is driving me nuts.
Yet, some results are worth the trouble.
This is the DNA made with DAZStudio i used a year ago:

And after a lot of tutorials and fiddling i managed to follow a tutorial for a DNA string and since then i'm using this image made with Eevee:

The difference is like day and night(and i don't want to toot my own horn here)

I'm actually way more impressed by the one you made in Daz as I have no idea how you'd have the patience to create that in Daz... whereas I know exactly how I'd do this in Blender.

But then I've been using Blender for years... and I really find Daz too frustrating to learn it properly.

Hard to tell tbh. After something like 2 years of using Daz, I think mostly they lack clear leadership/direction.

Eevee > *, such an amazing engine .
You're completely right tho. I just want to put thing in perspective.

The DNA i used in DAZ was a simple .obj
The Blender one was made from scratch ... and love.

It was just to show a small example what someone can achieve IF someone is willing to put the time and effort to learn blender.
And i don't know if it's worth all that for porn games. For learning to work in 3D as a whole then yes, you should learn blender.

As a whole yes, indeed.
Like everyone, all I just wanted is to render my good looking pinup.
If I can make an analogy, I would say Blender sycophant are just what was linux for gamers.
Don't blame Daz or you will miss the point.

Yup. I see no problem appreciating pinups made with DAZ or Blender, they have both their pros and cons.
r34 is full of game models rigged for Blender and a lot of the animations look damn good. Tried anims myself in DAZ and
that sucked(maybe i should put more time into it). And yet, i find the lighting with DAZ more crisp and expressive than blenders
oftentimes soft and washy impressionistic style of lighting.

You can be sad about it but that's just how it is somehow.
Here the best cycles skin ever tho :
Followed by the second one :
Hope you can make your mind or I ll push the third one.

Imagine not using almighty Blender.
You could not make a VN game such as :
- (error)
And all of his assets :
- (not found)

I have to do it, don't blame me lol.
