I guess you're talking about western market. My favourite time when it comes to trends was like 12 years ago when AIF games were dominating and Goblinboy was there. Brilliant, immersive life simulations without strong incest everywhere. They felt really good in comparison to all those games broken by idiotic incest barely-existent plot nowadays. I also think that new chapter has been opened recently - pure incest games don't reach audience anymore as they did 1-2 years ago and NTR is discussed everywhere so I hope for some dope changes in a few years.

I think that "ren'py" games are the way to go. VN's are mostly boring, not many people cared to make AIF games with pictures and FUCK rpgmaker games. There is no need for any sort of gameplay filler in these games. There is simply not enough talent in the field to make a porn version of Final Fantasy 6(a masterpiece!) . I will be baffled if any one says that the modern way isn't the best. I hope that in the years to cum people will perfect it and build upon all of the awesome games that are already deep into development (Big Brother, Dating my daughter,Dreams of desire etc..)

Renpy games are mostly VNs. Western culture doesn't have its own style so they use mostly 3d renders and are much more focused on sex rather than plot. But they're still VNs.
Modern way isn't the best. Renpy engine is fine but Patreon monthly-releases are terrible for games and whole market, making games and devs patron dependant on a monthly basis. People (especially horny) don't think what's good for a game when they want fast gratification in every update. That way they push devs making games rushed and sometimes even broken (BB).
