I would also suggest Sierra Lee games. ;]
(Her writing is top-notch! Although I've only played the first two.)
The Last Sovereign
Desecration of Wings
Ouroboros
Crimson Gray
Crimson Gray: Dusk and Dawn

I'm playing through Deliverance by 1Thousand right now and that an interesting story. Healslut by Davie Zwei has some fabulous writing in it, but is less serious and more comedic in its approach.

Haven't really tried these (yet) but several of my friends swear by them...
Ataegina
High-Rise Climb

And if Hreinn Games ever get their act together, I'd suggest Kingdom of Deception, in which Sierra also worked on in the very early days. And this is pretty good, Seeds of Chaos. It caters to a wide range of tastes, but it has one of more unique stories found on the site.

There are more, of course, but these ones popped into my head first at the time of this post. Try new and different games, and have fun! ^^

Any MrDots games. That team's thing is providing a well-written story. The flame wars on all their game's threads though would be a good indicator that their plots can be controversial as well.
