Review of version 1.0.12
Let me start by saying that, under no circumstances, do I consider a 3-star rating to be bad. The game is really well-executed, but I think it's simply impossible to give an unbiased opinion on a game that, despite the developers' technical skills, just isn't your cup of tea.
Magical Diary: Wolf Hall is a sweet and laid-back game. Don't expect major plot twists, sensitive themes, violence, explicit nudity, or any other kind of extremes. I think this makes it extremely suitable for a specific audience - one that I don't belong to. Overall, I found the game lukewarm.
The progression dynamics didn’t particularly appeal to me, although they aren't terrible. Attending classes is almost a luck-based grind. The exams usually have only one possible solution, or at most, two.
While some characters touch on more mature themes, the protagonist is locked into a sweet and almost childlike persona. Dialogue options never allow for assertiveness, cruelty, irony, or a rebellious mindset, or anything of the sort. While your choices do impact the development of your story, who you are has already been unshakably decided by the developers - or at least, that was my impression.
It’s not a bad game, far from it. It’s worth giving it a shot - maybe look into it a bit more before buying to see if it aligns with your expectations. It may not be my style, but I always try to recognize craftsmanship when I see it, and this game is definitely well-polished.
The three-star rating reflects, among other things, my personal taste. I believe that if I enjoyed the game’s lukewarm approach, I could have rated it four stars - perhaps. In short, Magical Diary: Wolf Hall is for a specific audience. If you fall into that demographic, you’ll have a great time. If not, you’re better off finding another visual novel to spend your time with.
