Review for Master of Seduction (updated for v0.14.1):
Overall: 4/5 - This is probably the best first-person real-time-rendered 3D adult game I've played to date. Maybe that's not saying much since there are only a couple dozen such games, but this game can be played on a mid-range system and the graphics are better than a lot of statically-rendered VNs. There isn't a lot of lewd content yet, but there's enough and what's there is top of the line for real-time rendered content.
Story: 3/5 - Not a lot of a story, yet. Maybe that's a good thing for a porn game, since too much story means too much time has to be spent on making the story itself more attractive with drama/action/mystery/etc., then even more work is needed to keep it coherent.
Writing: 3.5/5 - It's above average, but not enough to call good. It has improved significantly since the first release. I'm hopeful that the improvements in translation and proofreading will continue.
Graphics/Rendering: 4/5 - The developer's "world" design really helped reduce the scope of the game to what's most important in adult games. There's just the house, the yard, and the people and objects within. There's no huge open world, no fighting/driving/flying mechanics, and no crazy graphics effects. It reduces the computing power needed for the game while allowing development to concentrate on the more adult aspects of the game, such as story and lewd content, while not eliminating the possibility of adding more locations later. Most similar games either have terrible performance or the have graphics that look 20 years old, but this game has real-time graphics that are better than a some recent Ren'py games and yet doesn't require a $1K graphics card to play. That's impressive. The only things I found disappointing about the graphics were the models for the bushes and trees in the garden.
Animations: 4/5 - The game has background animations like the trees swaying in the wind, the beach ball moving in the pool. These add ambience and immersion to the game. The characters have idle animations while going about their daily lives, such as Hannah gardening or cleaning and Jessica just sitting. These aren't bad, but a Hanna cleaning the table with her boobs swaying is a little overdone (as an attempt to be more sexy) and the loop is too short and doesn't look natural. Finally, there are the canned animations during events. These are mostly lewd scenes and they're good. I think they are just replays that are also rendered in real-time, which helps keep the game size small. It's kind of a missed opportunity, though, as these could be replaced with high-resolution cutscenes that really impress players, at the expense of increased game size, of course.
Sound: 4.5/5 - There are a lot of sound effects in the game. There are some sighs and giggles while talking to the characters in the game, which are good. There are moans and such during lewd scenes that are also good. The ambient sounds of birds/animals and roosters crowing are good. Those sounds also less frequent in the evening and stop at night, which is a nice effect. The coffee machine and shower have good sound effects. The sound of the water in the pool is OK, but it's too loud for the distance the MC stands from the pool. The sound of the MC swimming in the pool is different and it's also good.
Gameplay 3/5: - Gameplay is typical for this time of game, but some of the game's feature make the playtime much more tedious than it needs to be.
Interaction mechanics. A crosshair has been added since the v0.7 release, but it's a little quirky. It seems to be implemented as a tiny floating sphere that is always about 1.5m in front of the MC's direct line of sight. So, if the MC walks close to a wall or looks up or down, the sphere will be on the other side of the wall or above the ceiling or below the floor and so it's no longer visible. The crosshair does help with just walking (and especially running), but it unfortunately has limited usefulness when trying to interact with nearby objects.
The grind is tedious, but improving. The 0.7 release had a very limited set of "favors" to perform to increase relationship points. A few more have been added since then. The MC's stat-builders for appearance, brainpower, and fitness are just 5 seconds of black screen, which is boring. The number of relationship and stat points required to meet event requirements needs to be reduced for players that don't appreciate grind (maybe with an "easy mode" menu option).
Work/Job mechanic. The MC works 4 hours on a laptop in his office and he's too exhausted to work anymore until the next day. Does he live in Vanuatu where a standard workday is only 4 or 5 hours? The MC can work only 2-hour increments of up to 4 hours per day. All available jobs pay about 10x the MC's brainpower stat. The pay is fixed per job but the jobs consume either 4 hours or 8 hours. So, for the 8-hour jobs, the MC earns half as much per hour as the 4-hour jobs. This doesn't make sense and I think it might be a bug.
Movement mechanics. It is too easy to bump into things that halt or slow forward movement. The addition of the crosshair has improved this a lot.
Cleanliness mechanics. Only lewd acts cause the MC's cleanliness to decrease. A full shower now increases the MC's cleanliness by 100%. Previously it was 25%, which I think was just there for gameplay grind, but that could be replaced by a slow decay of cleanliness (e.g., the MC loses 1 or 2% of cleanliness per hour) which would at least make sense.
The events/task system works OK, but it's really immersion-breaking to have to manually start story events and favors from the <Tab> menu vs. starting them naturally by talking to a character or interacting with an object. E.g., instead of opening the <Tab> menu and selecting Hannah's favor "Coffee Love", why not just interact with the coffee machine and have it open a menu that says "Make a coffee for Hannah" "Make a coffee for Jessica", "Make a coffee for myself." or something like that. Same thing for watering the plants, etc. And the "Lost and Found" task could have a dialogue option that says "Did you lose something?" that triggers the task.
The UI needs optimization. There are a lot of places where clicks are unnecessary. I really dislike the [Continue] button vs. just being able to click anywhere to advance the dialogue. There are also a lot of cases during events where the [continue] button appears, but the player can't click it for 2 or 3 seconds. I think it's because a transition is in progress, but it's super annoying.
Bugs: 3/5 - I made a long list of bugs I found in v0.7 and I saw that the developer fixed most of them, but I didn't check them all. This is great progress. I only found one new issue in v0.14.1 which was that I couldn't interact with one of the blueberries in the "Fruit Love" quest. I had to keep moving around until MC was standing inside the bush to finally interact with it.
I think this game has a great start and I know it's a huge undertaking. This should be obvious by how many bugs have been fixed and how little content was added between 0.7 and 0.14. I expect it will smooth out over time, but it's still going to be a lot of time. I very sincerely wish the best for the developer because the adult gaming industry needs more good games like this.
