I tried to do it with 1.09, the file was sharedassets0.assets (the same name as the modded file which was meant to be overwritten). I using Unity Bundle Extractor to extract the original file, there was no problem. Until I using the same software to extract the modded file, it couldn't due to an error saying it can't find the streaming file (in this case was sharedassets0.assets.resS file that comes with the original). I tried to copy that .resS file next to the modded file in the same folder, extract again, still another error saying the assets are too small and couldn't extract the whole file.
TLDR: Can't extract without "sharedassets0.assets.resS" therefore can't be packed again to make it compatible to 1.09
I didn't try using Unity Studio yet and I could be doing something wrong too, please let me know.

Tried packing and unpacking, didn't work. Well, guess we have to wait more and more...
Holy I forgot about this game. Looks like the new content could possibly drop in october? So that's exciting. I'll have to replay from the beginning but whatever. Btw did anyone ever figure out what the secret in v1.09 was? I think I stopped playing before it was discovered.

There's hopefully going to be news at the end of this month, on if they're going to be able to make the release early next month. As far as I know the secret is still secret.

Thought the (new) crack wasn't working, but it might be the game. The maybe cracked game got stuck loading up, but the game without it is stuck on the warning about old saves not working and will only quit to desktop. In the mean time...
The game is meant to be on sale for the release but it doesn't seem to have triggered yet...

Yeah there was a popup warning about my 1.09 getting backed and deleted unless I quit out, as it wasn't 2.0 compatible. It looks like someone's playing the game on Steam, but I still get stuck in a very lag causing loading screen.
Edit - Reinstalling didn't help. And someone's now taking about a new event, so it seems like something on my end.

You should get a warning about 1.09 save compatibility, and the game is currently half price for the release of the expansion if your thinking about buying it.
Edit - For some people the start up is seriously bad, crashing and/or taking a very long time. It's now just taking a while for me. The updated mod seemed to work with newer versions until the rivals map, so...

It's really a let down that can't use old saves, given how much mindless grind it involves.
Had dev said anything about looking into the issue? I'm sure it's not a small one. And a full-save really doesn't solve it for whom wanna play.
Something like an in-game cheat to let you choose what to unlock for the past - that's a common approach when saves aint backward compatible.

Don't think it's something that can be fixed, the 2.0 game was just too different. And the Unity version might have been updated going by the crack, but not sure about that. Cheat Engine apparently used to work.
