If i had a dollar every time a independent Game-dev has become depressed and slowed down or even outright stopped working on their game, i'd be surprisingly rich.
Damm imagine getting depressed when gaining 3700 dollars per month just writing text...
It's just specifically porn games where this is super common. The standards for porn games are incredibly low, actual professional game developers do not make porn games, AAA does not make porn games. They're very rare.
The vast majority of people who make porn games have no prior experience in either art or programming. That's why a big portion of games you see on f95 are same-y 3d rendered games with shit animations, they're all made on daz3d. The anime ones on koikatsu. None of these need any experience to make basic scenes or renders.
Granted, MGD has a tad bit more effort put into it than those. Most 2d games tend to have more effort spent in them.
The kind of culture you see in porn games as an industry is kinda amazing. There are 0 repercussions to not releasing an update. Hero Harem Guild has not released an update in 2 fucking years and gets 7k per month still. This industry as a whole is amazing.
I'd definitely venture into it if I didn't have to lie about what I do for a living to friends and family.
I'd like to see how these fuckers would fare in the real world. I can't imagine getting thousands upon thousands for straight up not feeling like working.

Yeah, I hate walls of text too, but sadly I couldn't make it any shorter.
It's not that hard. When you run out of creativity and feel forced to release content as punctual as possible, and realize it's getting even harder for you to think about new ideas... It's just natural to start spiraling into more deeper depression at each passing moment ("I know, I've tried that shit" - Big Smoke, GTA: SA).
If you have trouble understanding my POV, imagine you're an engineer, and that you're assigned to solving a problem so difficult there're no references of solutions to similar problems neither on books nor the web. And you have a time limit of, let's say, 7 days (quite a short time if you're familiar with engineering works time), before losing a VERY important customer if you fail to find a solution. So, you must rely on your knowledge and your creativity to solve the problem. What happens if you have little to no creativity left? Either you get desperate at such a short deadline, or you sink into a hard-to-get-out depression; any of them prevents you from browsing through your knowledge for something that can be of use to solve the problem.
I know an engineer is supposed to be way more important than a writer, but they can suffer the same mental conditions despite gaining similar amounts of money per month.
I am not at expert at writing smut, but you can always get some other writer, not for helping, but to get some kind of help of where are you going to lead the history, maybe ask for another perspective or ideas. Or write not smut, but another thing to get inspire, I don't know, don't know if Threshold have the ending of the history or if the story is writing at the game advanced...
I just hope it gets more content faster, I really like this game, it's remainder at the universe of Monster Girl Encyclopedia to much.
The thing is, people in the real world don't get a get out of jail free card. We just make do. I'm an attorney in real life. I don't get to say haha i dunno im kinda burnt out when I get an important case. In the professional world where you're actually responsible for your actions you get shit done. Are you not employed? Would you be able to just take literal months off and expect pay and 0 repercussions?
And if you're feeling depressed, you quit and look after yourself. You don't get a client's money and sit on your ass. For years on end. But no porn game dev ever stops their patreon when they stop making content. Oh no.
Feel pity for me and emphatize about how utterly depressed I am, but don't question the fact that I'm still accepting money for no work done.
Why is it that porn game devs are the only people on god's earth that get to walk away free with 0 responsibility while getting paid ridiculous sums monthly? How is it that standards are so incredibly low specifically for porn game devs? Why is it that everyone else has to be aware of consequences, but not porn game devs?
For what it's worth I respect the dev for being able to find such an amazing sweet gig. Not only do you get a community that pays you for nothing, the same community also defends you no matter what you do (or in this case don't do.).
I'm also unsure if that engineer analogy actually works but eh.

This is real world though. The dev, a real person, is getting real money, that they can use to make real purchases, and maybe even support their real family.
Yes, I know what you mean, but I could use the same argument you used to talk about how spoiled the first world people are whereas in the real world you have to walk ten miles every day and work backbreaking labor from dawn to dusk.
Like it or not, the real world also includes the HR managers, nepotism hires, government bureaucracy where some departments might be overstaffed by an order of magnitude, and so on. Getting money on Patreon with no expectations is nice, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't even scratch the tier charts of unproductive jobs.
With the threats of being randomly banned or censored, and a lack of real world team to bounce off of and motivate, I can see how many people can get discouraged and depressed.
At the end of the day, the issue is between the Patrons and the developers, and if the people want to keep supporting, than that is the mandate for them to continue. Like I don't tell your client how much you're worth, it's up to them to decide for themselves.

But you CAN get burned out. That's my point. Burnout or lack of creativity can make a mess on one's emotions. And no, you don't always get shit done. First, if you're an attorney you have to realize you can't win forever. And second, I once had to give my phone to some technical support, and after some days they said they couldn't fix it. Of course they didn't get their money, but if I were them I certainly would feel too bad for not being able to do my job, which takes me back to what I said in my previous post.
And only politicians and public servants are moron enough to actually enjoy getting money for nothing, like qwerqwer1Q tried to say.
I think you're mistaking devs here. There're a couple of devs I know who would fit this description perfectly. But Threshold, though very slowly I might add, releases updates for this game. There're other devs who claim being developing their games and not releasing ANYTHING AT ALL for like 7 years and counting. Threshold just isn't one of them, not yet (and frankly I don't think neither any sooner).
Man, you should really visit South America. There're plenty of politicians and public servants out here that would make porn game devs look as one of the hardest workers on Earth. No shit, it's true.
No, I ain't. I'm on my last university year, studying electronics engineering. My sister is one of the most recognized electrical engineers of Latin America, having worked for more than 8 years now, so I really KNOW what I'm talking about. She has had similar problems in the past like Threshold does now, and she had no one to ask to get help for her work problems. So the analogy is quite useful here. And my sister managed to bring to her mind last minute solutions that actually worked, so the most important factor for the rest of people here is to keep our faith. Show me proof Threshold's a liar, and that there's no use waiting for this game to get even another update. Come on, go ahead.
One of the devs I mentioned above had his Patreon account shut down by Patreon itself, basically for not posting enough evidence of updates. So there are consequences, but sadly they come later than sooner. Can't remember how much time without updates caused his account to shut down, but it was something like 2 years. It's the no-update-for-7-years guy I mentioned before.
And I get what you mean. I'm NOT a simp. I just defend people who get harassed by things they didn't do (and before you say it, no, I don't mean I defend Threshold for not releasing updates, I defend him for not being a thief like you and others tend to say. Did he disappear with all the money? No, he's still "alive". So he's not a thief).

Iirc and stuff hasnt changed then:
1.Open old version.
2.Save on town.
3.Quit/Exit old version.
4.Launch new version.
5.Load save file.
6.Save in town again to update save file to new version.
Done.
Thread is becoming more cursed and deranged as we all continue to wait for another update to happen.

Kids these days have never had to learn patience. A lot of these devs are doing this for little or no pay, during their spare time, while they attempt to have lives. I'm heartbroken over some of the promising games we've lost, but I cherish the ones that are still kicking, however slowly. "All things in time."That's usually how it goes, sadly. At least we have a proper mod support unlike some other games

Yep that's how it goes, they also can't do their own research and want lots of stuff handed to them too nowadays. Not all mind you, but wayyyyyyyy too many.
Plenty of things to bind your time while you wait for other stuff to release.
I waited 19 years+ for metroid dread.
this dev is working full time + earning 3k+ usd for a long time. The problem in this game is the stupid labyrinth update, dev was too stubborn and wasted an entire year for it. He has a good pace right now I think, but I really really really hope that he doesnt try to introduce another weird gameplay mechanic (for the capital) that nobody asked for. You dont do shit like this in renpy, takes too much time. I bet it would take only 14days to do that in unity (the labyrinth).
